I'm anxious to see how the Packers' defense looks. Starters are expected to play 10-15 snaps. Clay Matthews & Jeremy Thompson are both out, so the front 7 is more or less unchanged from last year (Jenkins/Pickett/Jolly | Kampman/Chillar/Hawk/Poppinga) at this point. I expect to see Poppinga, Jolly, and Chillar (although I think Chillar will have a major role in situational defenses) displaced in the starting line-up before the opener.

Raji is allegedly in shape, but for good reason he won't be suiting up until Monday. Johnny Jolly should be taking his place in the starting line-up. (I still think Raji will be the other starting DE, his being listed just at NT on the depth chart should be just temporary.) Hopefully Jolly will be able to play disciplined ball at DE, he had a real problem with freelancing at DT. That's fine and dandy for pass rushing (his forte), but is a serious issue with run defense. I'm really bummed Justin Harrell is hurt and not able to play, although at this point it's nowhere near shocking. He's the guy I was looking forward to see in action the most before he went down early this week, and is a much better fit as a 3-4 end than Jolly.

Should be interesting to see how Kampman looks at LOLB. Can they make him change his number or something? It's going to be so odd seeing a #74 standing upright, much less doing anything athletic. All accounts from Training Camp allude to Kampman being up to the challenge. Bummer that Thompson is out. Hopefully the staff will see enough of him (and Matthews, for that matter) throughout the year to accurately gauge whether or not they need to re-sign Kampman.

Not that there's a threat of him being cut or anything, but AJ Hawk really needs to come out strong to show that last year's downward level of performance really was the injuries. If he really is on the downside of his career already (not that I think so), I'm sure Desmond Bishop would be a great fit at SILB.

Woodson & Harris are both sitting, and Pat Lee is out. Really wanted to see Pat Lee in there to get some game reps, but he's another guy with back issues.

Offensively, I'm looking forward to some good old-fashioned Jermichael action at TE. Love, love, love that name, but wouldn't be surprised to see him get a few penalties this year for running his mouth.

I hope Scott Wells falls on his face (nothing personal) so the staff can keep Spitz at C and ergo Josh Sitton at RG. Same for Tony Moll (this one is personal). Sick of seeing that guy flounder. Also interested in seeing how Giacomini looks at RT in game situations, as my mind can't possibly fathom a dude named 'Breno' being an adequate starter at any position. I'm in the TJ Lang camp for that reason until proven otherwise.

And finally, c'mon Ryan Grant. Show me something. I'd like to see him alternate carries with Deshawn Wynn so we have an adequate barometer of where they're at competition-wise. Tom Silverstein of the J-S says that Grant's job (starting job, I presume) is in jeopardy if he can't get back to breaking some long runs, also mentioning that Wynn has to prove he can stay healthy. That's a promising development in my eyes, but is it a bad thing if I don't quite believe it's true?

Anyways, all these words for the first pre-season game.... it's been a long off-season.

I'm assuming this is only available on local tv? I didn't see it on the NFL Network (although it might be on overnight or tomorrow--I didn't look that far ahead) or anywhere else.

All the pre-season games this year for the Packers are on their state network only. No national feeds. NFL Network my re-run them though.

This needs to start now. I bought Madden '10 last night cause I'm going crazy. And of course the player ratings are absolutely awful for the Packers, but that's nothing new.

Will you have this left guard to be the 224th pick?

The player ratings are awful for every team this year ha. They changed the way they do the ratings. But thats for another thread.

Anyways, I can't wait to see how the defense looks in its first test run.

Wow, that's one hell of an opening drive to start the season.... pass game, run game, o-line play all looked great.

I'd like to see Sutton get some reps against better competition. Liked him in college, and he's looked good tonight.

I'm not a fan of Brohm at all... he's got time yet, but he just doesn't make timely decisions in the passing game.

I know it's week #1 of the preseason, but man, the Browns looked like the worst team in football tonight.

Just a few thoughts:

Yes, I know it's preseason, but I'm excited about our offense. I get the real impression we could be an offensive machine this year- and the season's successes will rely almost entirely on the defense's play. Nice to get glimpses early of the pressure/havoc created by the 3-4. I only expect that to continue as the preseason goes along.

I think it was very telling that even with Matthews out last night, Chillar never saw the field on defense as an OLB.

Jermichael Finley might well end up looking Thompson's best second day pick when this season is over. Man, it was fitting to have Keith Jackson on the sideline last night, because Finley looked like a young KJ last night, with same number and all.

Chillar was at WILB, right? Are you thinking of someone else?

Anyways, good to see the first-team offense shred the vanilla defense the paranoid Mangenius put out last night. Not sure what it really means though. Rodgers looked good for the most part, but his decision to go to Jennings so early into the play on that 4th & 5 attempt was a bit off. Jennings was probably the best covered of his options on that play. Didn't matter though because a.) it's pre-season and b.) they were bailed out by a penalty. Called it on the Jermichael-time, too.

Defensively, Poppinga looked awful in contain. I think he'll see the field on special teams only this year, barring several long-term injuries from Matthews/Thompson ahead of him. I thought Hawk looked okay yesterday. Didn't get a chance to see the back-ups outside of the highlights, but damn, Desmond Bishop is still all that is man against other 2nd stringers. Wouldnt mind seeing him in the starting line-up next game just so they can compare apples to apples. How would Hawk have looked playing against the Brown's b-team?

The Browns are clowns. They have a lot of problems. They are kind of funny.

I think this is spot on.

I think it was very telling that even with Matthews out last night, Chillar never saw the field on defense.

Chillar was not on the field? -- I am almost certain he was -- I paid a lot of attention to the front 7. I could have sworn he got some tackles.

Jermichael Finley might well end up looking Thompson's best second day pick when this season is over.

He stood out for sure... I also paid a lot of attention to the FBs, and I think Kuhn is the best at this point, but that Johnson kid could be fun to watch.

Defensively, Poppinga looked awful in contain.

Agreed, also, Kampman was SLOW in coverage as well -- not so much in speed, but in reaction. Hopefully this will improve.

I think he'll see the field on special teams only this year, barring several long-term injuries from Matthews/Thompson ahead of him.

I suspect they will keep him for depth. Starting Matthews at OLB in a 3-4, is really not a good idea. The Steelers have almost never handed over a starting job to a rookie OLB. If Matthews starts, it will be because of a lack of depth.

I thought Hawk looked okay yesterday. Didn't get a chance to see the back-ups outside of the highlights, but damn, Desmond Bishop is still all that is man against other 2nd stringers.

Bishop has outplayed Hawk in training camp so far this season -- Bishop should probably be starting if this continues. Hawk is in trouble of losing his job.

Correct, I should have said that Chillar never saw the field as an OLB, which is where his PT would come during the regular season and telling that he's not terribly high up on the depth chart there as of now. And yes, Poppinga certainly looks like he could play his way down the depth chart at this point.

I've only been able to watch the 1st half so far, but a lot of players showed some good things in this one. Flynn looked like a capable backup, and I feel much more comfortable knowing that he can at least be competent if Rodgers misses a game or two. Johnny Jolly was a monster in the 1st half. I especially like the open field one-on-one with the RB that he ended up winning. If him and Harrell can stay healthy (big "if"), this could be an extremely good D line.

As much as I couldn't stand Rich Gannon for most of it, he mentioned in the 1st half that the defense seemed to be playing very fast. I think he was right and it shows how far along they are with this defense. Some of those guys just looked they were flying around, which means they knew where they were supposed to be. I think we might see a lot of drives this year like we saw in this one. They'll give up slow drives, but eventually you just hope for that one mistake and get a turnover.

It was also nice to see James Jones back and making plays. And Quinn Johnson absolutely blew up a few guys while lead blocking. Grant looked decent. Jackson looked okay for the most part...seemed a little bit too shifty at times and too much side-to-side and not enough forward running.

Will you have this left guard to be the 224th pick?

Sutton stood out to me. I like the burst that he showed, which is contradictory to his 40 time. I would assume that it's between Lumpkin and him for the practice squad? They are planning on keeping Wynn and Jackson, right? That backfield looks crowded after Grant.

I doubt he's even played a snap at OLB in practice. He's a pure WILB in this scheme. He'll likely be a nickel ILB and perhaps an early down player if Barnett isn't ready to go. He's definitely going to play.
