What are everybody's expectations of Bret Bielema's 2009 squad?

I am pretty optimistic. I think the offense can be amongst the best of the Big Ten. Johnny Clay may emerge as the Big Tens best running back and Zach Brown is no slouch either. I like our recievers with Gilreath, Toon, Anderson, and Jefferson, and our TE's are strong once again with Graham, Kendricks, and Turner. The O-Line should be decent like it is every year

The only question mark on offense is the QB position. At the spring game I was impressed with Curt Phillips and I really hope he gets the job. He has a better arm than Sherer and can make plays with his legs as well.

Of course on defense theres a bunch of question marks as well, is the Dline too small? But I like McFadden and Valai to become playmakers this year. Last year we were supposed to have a "star studded" awesome defense and look what that gave us. It wouldn't surprise me to see this year the D play much better together and become a solid defense.

That being said looking at the Badgers schedule, 8 wins should be a lock. Anything below that should be unacceptable. We don't play Penn State and Illinois this year, and we have Michigan, Michigan State, and Iowa all at home this year. The schedule is very favorable.

NIU
Fresno
Woffard
MSU
@ Minn
@OSU
Iowa
Purdue
@Indiana
Michigan
@NU
@Hawaii

I don't know much about the squad as I really don't pay close attention to college football except for watching the games. I learn the players' names as the season goes on.

Here's my guesses on the season, however.

NIU - Win (at least they darn well better)
Fresno - Tossup, but I think they'll pull out a squeaker like last year-Win
Woffard - Win (see NIU)
MSU - Loss (we never seem to play all that well there)
@ Minn - I'm going with Win
@OSU - I think they'll get shredded in the Horseshoe this year- Loss
Iowa - Win (I owe a buddy a case of beer otherwise)
Purdue - Win
@Indiana - Win
Michigan - I'll go with Win on a last play of the game (offense, defense, special teams? Not sure which)
@NU - Win
@Hawaii - Loss

That's a 9-3 record from me.

I'm not sure about the final record, but i don't have any high hopes for the team. Not only is the QB position a major concern, i think the defense will get lit up this year. I see a lack of pass rushers on the DL, a LB core with major question marks, and as does the secondary, especially at CB.

I'll echo the concerns about the defense, particularly the DL and the lack of experience. I don't have concerns about the LBs; the problem with the LBs last year was that the DL wasn't holding up against the run (fatigue from not being rotated, undersized), causing the linemen to get into the defensive backfield on the linebackers. According to the depth chart they have Stehle starting and Cascone as the backup at DT, but Stehle didn't spend a lot of time on the field last year and I don't recall Cascone ever playing a snap and that is cause for concern when both are Seniors.

This squad reminds me a lot of the 1984 squad... look at the list of names on that team: Al Toon, Richard Johnson, Darryl Sims (all 3 first round picks), Scott Bergold (2nd), Dan Turk, Jeff Dellenbach (4th round picks, long NFL careers), Gary Ellerson, Kevin Belcher (both 7th round picks), and Ken Stills (8th) as seniors and as sophmores Nate Odomes, Rick Graf, Tim Jordan, Michael Reid... yet IIRC they went 7-4. Well, that happens when Bob Kobcza is your QB after you lose Randy Wright. The Badgers have a lot of talent this year on offense everywhere except QB. The line is going to have to play great in order to open holes for Clay, but I don't know that they have a QB who right now can get the receivers the ball ("right now" being key words, meaning "ready" and "experienced" as I think Phillips and Budmayr have talent but are not ready yet).

Some observations about the post-spring depth chart:

- No FB listed - apparently will be exclusively double TE (good because they have plenty of TEs)
- Bscherer listed as starter at LG
- Whomever is playing QB is going to have to have deep drops and have to be tall because their OL has three guys 6'7" and two guys 6'4".
- No seniors on OL on depth chart at all on 1st or 2nd string
- Tyler Westphal not listed on depth chart (is he healthy?)

NIU
Fresno
Woffard
MSU
@ Minn
@OSU
Iowa
Purdue
@Indiana
Michigan
@NU
@Hawaii

Wins: NIU, Fresno, Woffard, Purdue, Indiana, Michigan, Hawaii
Losses: Ohio State
Maybes: MSU, Minn, Iowa, NU

So I feel thats 7 "lock" wins, 1 "lock" loss.

I say the Badgers end up splitting the "maybes" and go 9-3.

Count me among those who can't get a fix on the Badgers play this year, since I know so little about their D-Line.
(They did pretty well in NCAA Football 10...but that's not necessarily an accurate representation.)

I agree that last year, the DL was the biggest problem with the defense. They got pushed off the ball to much against the run and allowed to much time for QB's to throw. That said, we lost two quality starting outside linebackers and there is no way to know how their replacements will play and McFadden is a very pedestrian MLB from what i've seen from him so far. If the DL struggles at all, mixing with this group of linebackers, teams could end up running wild on us. Then if god forbid Shane Carter ever gets snaps as a starting safety with his red cape tackling style, the run defense could be frightening.

Cornerback is another major concern of mine. Henry showed some nice skills as a freshman, but even then he wasn't a speed burner. Now he's had these knee problems, will he have enough speed to be at least a solid starting CB? Brinkley is the other projected starter from what i've read and the guy got repeatedly torched last year. He was either getting run right passed or he was getting flagged for interference or holding. Hopefully he learned from last year and plays much better, but as of right now though, i'm not exactly brimming with confidence about a Henry/Brinkley duo at the starting corners. Valai i like at one of the starting safety jobs, but neither Maragos or Carter played well last year. I'm really hoping that Maragos wins the job next to Valai because i've seen enough of Shane Carter whiffing on tackles to last a lifetime. Carter has some ball hawking abilities, but i don't know if i've ever seen softer starting safety in all my years watching football.

On offense, obviously QB is the biggest question/concern right now. Sherer just sucks and i have no idea if Phillips is ready yet to perform at a high level. IMO, i'd rather roll the dice on the youngster vs playing a veteran hat we already know is bad. The offensive line though will need to step up and help whoever is the starting QB. The last few years, i've grown tired of hearing each game about how big the Badgers OL is from game announcers, only to then watch those guys not be able to pass block well enough. Being able to run block is fine and dandy, but the pass blocking needs to be better, especially with the QB situation and with the fact that the Chryst run offense isn't just run run run an run some more. Chryst likes to pass more than Brian White did, but he can't expect the passing game to function if the QB is constantly under pressure.

Isn't that a home game, though? Does that change your prediction, pitchleague, or do you think the Spartans will still be tough at Camp Randall? Not 'calling you out', just curious as to whether or not you'd pick MSU @ C.Randall.

um, probably because I thought it was a road game and didn't even read my own schedule correctly.

I still think it'll be a loss, though. Just not for the same reason, though. Thanks for pointing out my mistake.

No worries... I just wanted to know if you liked MSU that much, or if it was just a tough road locale Image

My over/under number is 7 this year. Hate to be a pessimist, but I haven't seen player progression under "2Bs" and there are huge Huh??? all over the place. DL, OL, LB and especially QB.
I like that he's starting Tolzien and splitting time with Brown and Clay, assuming we can trust his and Chryst's judgment.
We are indeed a very young team, so that's a hopeful sign.

Westphal has been hurt and will be back on the roster soon, but don't expect any contribution this year.

They win at least 8 games this year. The Badgers terribly underperformed next year and it won't happen again. The quarterback play should improve. The running game should be awesome. In my opinion, the biggest question mark is the coaching staff. Last year we were way too predictable and made a number of poor late game decisions. They are capable of 10-2 if things go well. We will know much more after tomorrow night.

So whats the consensus after the first two games?

Scott Tolzein has impressed me. I think our offense now has potential to be in the top tier of the Big Ten, but whats going to kill us is our defense, especially our secondary. The corners have played terrible since the 3rd quarter of the NIU game. But even as bad as our defense has been, the defense has been clutch when it has needed to come up big (thanks Chris Maragos). Maybe the return of Aaron Henry will help out the secondary.

We really do have an easy schedule and I think the MSU game will be very telling to what our seasons going to be like. But we can't forget about Woffard this week, they are a damn good FCS team. (Cal Poly anyone?)

Agree about MSU being a benchmark game, and the Flu Factor last week can't be ignored. We found a QB, or so it seems, but the OL and secondary are definite question marks. The run game was mostly non-existent, at least by UW standards, last week.
That's why a nice blowout and a return of Moffitt and Nagy and a healthy Henry this weekend would be good to see.

Wow, were they impressive today (save for the last two minutes of garbage time.) They really dominated MSU in all facets. Scott Tolzien has been just a huge surprise. I can't remember a Wisconsin team having this much success throwing downfield. It will be interesting to see how they play on the road, but to me MSU was a pretty big test that they aced. Third or fourth in the Big 10 isn't out of the question.

I'm reluctant to change my prediction of 8 wins until I see them win on the road. Minnesota isn't going to be a home away from home this year, although I expect them to win. The 8-point win should keep them out of the top-25, which is probably a good thing for now--but the matchup with Ohio State is going to be huge if they take care of business like they should next week.

Gotta revise mine for sure - this isn't a 7-5 team, and the conference doesn't look all that impressive to me, even DOSU.
Gotta think this is now a 9 win team, but we could still shoot ourselves in the foot or suffer a bad injury.

Iowa stunning Penn State at home tonight opens this conference up wide. OSU is probably the class of the conference, but everyone else is jumbled right behind them. Even Indiana showed today that they're not automatically going to be bottom feeders this year. If the Badgers play like they did today, they should have a nice season.

So far so good for the run defense. Take out the 25 yard scramble and they only gave up 75 rushing yards. A bigger, deeper DL rotation is showing that it helps - being able to start Watt (285) at DE with Moore (280) and Stehle (290) at DT appears to be allowing the LBs to make thier plays. Butrym (290) and Hein (285) also rotated in, and I was surprised to see Gilbert (#11) the true freshman lining up at DT on passing downs late in the game. Looks like they are going to redshirt Kohout.

Not sure what to think of the pass defense - three INTs but almost 400 passing yards given up and a botched prevent defense late in the game. Borland was generating some pressure late - he's going to be a beast.

Curious though - with Konz getting the start at C and Zietler starting at G, is that because they have earned it or is it due to injuries or guys still having the flu? I saw Bscherer get in the game, which would suggest that one of those two has subsequently beaten him out.
