If a team from the Big Ten or Pac-10 plays in the national championship game, the Rose Bowl is contractually obligated to take the non-AQ qualifier. So I think the only way a WIS-STAN game happens, is if Boise St and TCU lose.

It could also happen if TCU or Boise plays for the national championship (only 1 non-AQ team is guaranteed a BCS spot so 1 of them playing for the title would fulfill that obligation). I honestly think that's pretty likely because I don't see Auburn beating Alabama with this Cam Newton cloud hanging over them.

A non automatic qualifier qualified. So a team from a non big 6 conference that is qualified to play a BCS game, which iirc is being in the top 12 in the BCS standings? I also forgot the obvious of Oregon losing.

NFL Blitz has better referees.

It refers to the top ranked non-BCS conference team. If they are highly ranked enough, 1 non-BCS conference team is guaranteed a BCS spot (this rule was put in a few years ago, I think because of Utah (iirc, there was some concern nationally that they would miss out despite being undefeated that one season)).

No offense to anyone, but who really cares if they beat Boise State and didn't get respect.  Does it matter at that point?  I'd love to see the Badgers take on Boise State or TCU.  No better program to make a statement on these teams.  I see a physical beatdown, especially on Boise State.

Thanks for the non-AQ clarification.

I'd like to see the Badgers play an undefeated team. I'm not sure I even agree about it being a no-win situation. Imagine this scenario: TCU and Boise flip back and forth the next couple weeks in the BCS standings and they end up really close in the final poll. Auburn loses to Alabama next week. Oregon plays TCU for the title and Wisconsin plays Boise State in the Rose Bowl. TCU beats Oregon by a slim margin in the title game and Wisconsin owns Boise 63-27 or something like that. Are you telling me that Wisconsin couldn't get some national championship votes in the AP poll in that scenario? Or possibly even finish on top in the final AP poll? Admittedly all those things happening are not necessarily likely but it's not like it's far-fetched either.

I care because the downside of playing them and losing is far greater than playing them and winning.

Don't get me wrong, I'd much rather play TCU or BSU in the Rose Bowl than someone like Pitt in the Fiesta or Va Tech in the Orange Bowl, by far. But if I had my choice, I prefer Stanford. As others have mentioned, we're reliant on other things happening before Stanford is even an option, barring a surprise Oregon loss to Arizona or Oregon State.

What downside?  They either win the Rose Bowl, and finish in the top 3 in the nation, or lose the Rose Bowl and finish in the top 12 (?).  So, basically they either win the Rose Bowl or lose the Rose Bowl.  There's no downside in winning the Rose Bowl.  That's college football.  They won't make the National Championship game, so beat who you get paired up with in the bowl game.  What's the difference between Stanford and Boise State?

From an earlier post:

if they lose, we're the credibility that is given to the BSU program and mentioned non-stop for the next 3 seasons for why these small-conference programs should be given a bigger look for the championship.

So we join Oregon, Virginia Tech, and Oklahoma...so what?  I look at it differently.  I look at it as Boise State doesn't know what's going to hit them...even though they know exactly what's going to hit them.  You dig?

Yeah, I'd be thrilled with a 42-13 win over Boise State. If you're confident that's going to happen it's one thing, but I'm not comfortable assuming that's going to happen, no matter how big a fan of this team I am.

I'd rather see it not because it behooves Wisconsin to play BSU -- it probably doesn't. But that's a game I'd go out of my way to watch. IMO, it's undoubtedly a sexier matchup and I'd be beyond curious about the outcome. The Badgers are probably a better team now than West Virginia, VA Tech, Oregon, Oklahoma were when they played BSU. Win or lose, I think it'd be a great test for both Wisconsin and Boise State.
