He's going to Oregon State, not exactly an upward move IMO. I'm not sad but I an surprised. I didn't think his offense fit the players they've historically been able to attract to Wisconsin.

I'm surprised by this news. Word on twitter seems to be that he had the same complaint that Bielema did about UW underpaying the assistant coaches. Apparently he also was upset about admissions policies (too stringent, I guess)?

I don't know that anybody was too attached to Andersen, but this still seems like it will hurt the perception of UW. Losing two head coaches to middling (at best) programs in the last 3 seasons is a bad look. Makes me appreciate Bo Ryan even more.

Did not see this one coming.

...is 2 years later enough time at the other school to hire Paul Chryst?

Well Chryst has been at Pitt longer than Anderson was at Wisconsin so yes. 2 coaches in two years make me think that Alvarez might be the problem.

Maybe, but the coaches of their other high profile programs have been in place for quite a while. If Alvarez was that bad, wouldn't the head coaches of other programs be looking for the exit too?

Like Mike Eaves. Whose team is currently sporting a 1-10-1 record.

I agree, the hockey team looks horrible this year, but Eaves has been there for a long time.

I just mean, Alvarez been the AD for a decade now. I would think there would have been strife in other programs too if he was so tough to work for. Unless the idea is that he only meddles with the football program.

I would guess that's probably the case. He meddles with what he knows and leaves the other coaches alone for the most part.

Wisconsin is one of the tougher schools in the Big 10 to get admission to, likely second behind Northwestern. Wisconsin lost DT Craig Evans from Sun Prairie when Anderson got here because he couldn't get into UW but could get into Michigan State (lowest academic entrance requirements).

As a current MBA student at UW, I can tell you likely some reasons why it is tough to get into. State funding of UW is down significantly; the state used to pick up >60% of the tab but now it is down to ~12%. UW is almost a private school now. Because of that, UW is heavily recruiting foreign students, many from Asia, to come here. Because of how much they pay to go here they get first priority for admissions. Probably 20% of the students in my elective courses are international non-MBA students. They only have X number of spots in classes for incoming students, so when the international students get priority it leaves fewer spots for others, raising the bar for everyone else.

The reality is that it is easier to recruit on the West Coast than at Wisconsin, certainly for him. Anderson is/was a West Coast guy - assistant under Urban Meyer at Utah, head coach at Utah State. The population is growing out West and down South, but not in the Midwest, so just by numbers there is more talent there to choose from. This more than anything is why the Big 10 has been in decline for some time.

I think he would have been a good coach and given more time would have been much better at recruiting. Not sad to see the offensive coordinator go though.

University of Wisconsin is ranked as the 24th best university in the world in 2014 per Shanghai Rankings. They were 19th in 2013.

http://www.shanghairanking.com/ARWU2014.html

I'm not sure what the difficulty would be here. Wisconsin is an academic powerhouse, and Andersen would have known that going in. He would know that by their very rigorous standards, a lot of great athletes looking to play college ball could never do it at UW. He should have had a pretty good idea what his coaches could be paid, too. These are things you discuss before you take a head coaching position at a major university.

I had a 3.4 GPA in high school fighting ADHD (not knowing what it was. Nobody had put a label on it before I got to college). I loved the University of Wisconsin, yet I knew that even with all my extra-curricular activities, had I remained in Wisconsin, I wouldn't have had a chance to get into the school.

I think Andersen snuck out like a rat in the night, if you ask me. "I had to do what was right for my family." Yeah, fine. I'm sure you arrived at this epiphany overnight, Gary.

Now, the 59-0 loss makes sense. It looked like the Badgers were completely unprepared, like they had no game plan. Good riddance to him. The university, the kids playing football for him, the alum and Badger fans everywhere deserve better than he gave in that last game.

Here's one of my theories...

He came from a university that was the "little brother" in the state. USU is in the shadow of its bigger, better counterpart in Utah. There is not much pressure from the media and fans to win. He comes here where the team is coming off of three straight Rose Bowls, and there is immense pressure to win right away. He fails miserably at any game where the nation's spotlight was squarely on the Badgers. He starts getting peppered with questions, including about his QB decisions earlier this year, and he doesn't know how to handle it. He has never faced that before. His name is mentioned on sports radio across the state. All eyes are on him...there is no other college team to take the attention.

Fast forward to Sunday/Monday/Tuesday. Who knows who made the first phone call, but he sees an opportunity for a job that is similar to what he had at USU, only with more resources at his disposal. The state-wide media in Oregon will focus on Oregon because it is a premier team in the nation. There won't be as much outside pressure on him to win. Sure, fans and alumni will want him to win, but there is not near the pressure there was on him when he got here. He may not have to do any kind of TV/radio commercials, either. He can keep a lower profile very easily.

Public comments, so take them for what they are worth:

"The one thing that I just want to make sure that everybody understands, it has nothing to do with the relationship that I had with coach Alvarez. In my opinion, we’ll talk a lot as we continue to move forward. He helped me. He was not nosy in football whatsoever. … I want to make sure that everybody understands that that’s not the fact of me leaving.”

“We also need to do a tremendous job in the junior colleges,” he said. “It’s something that as a staff we’ve had success with for many, many years and we’re excited about that. We couldn’t do as much as that in Wisconsin as we’ve done in the past.” Many, many years suggests they could get into Utah State, since he's only been at UW for two years.

Not only did Anderson lose Craig Evans to Michigan State because of admissions, he also lost juco recruit Serge Trezy last season who couldn't get admitted as well as WR Chris Jones who ended up being admitted to a MAC school. Joe Keels was another juco recruit who initially committed to Wisconsin, but then switched to Nebraska. Considering Keels is from Wisconsin (Kenosha), and knowing UW's lack of DL depth would have likely gotten playing time, it seems odd that he would leave UW. Maybe his admittance was questionable. Several other juco recruits visited but ended up signing with other schools. No proof of a fire, but lots of smoke suggesting it.

Paul Chryst is apparently the new HC. If this is true, then YES!

Now we can get the program where it needs to be. Improve the pass coverage, get a decent running game, and run towards the playoffs in 2015!

Im guessing this is what you meant. Clement looks like he could be pretty good.

In a twist of irony, Chryst once was Oregon State's offensive coordinator; he oversaw a 2003 Beavers squad that became the first team in NCAA Division I history to have a 4,000-yard passer (current Carolina Panthers QB Derek Anderson), a 1,500-yard rusher (current Atlanta Falcons running back Steven Jackson) and two 1,000-yard receivers (James Newson and Mike Hass).

It's not quite irony; Chryst was Mike Riley's TE coach for the Chargers. When Riley got fired, Chryst coached TEs at Wisconsin for a year. Riley took the HC job at Oregon State a year later, and Chryst went out West to take the Offensive Coordinator job.

Riley leaving for Nebraska opened the HC position for GA.

Badgers lose OL recruit Sam Madden because of admissions standards:

http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/288936321.html

Considering that Madden is cousins with UW alum John Moffit I think this is legitimately the case and not a case of a change in coaches.
