With no Michigan State, Ohio State, or Michigan on the schedule (until potentially the BIG Ten Championship game), the schedule is certainly in their favor. Toughest obviously is the first game vs. LSU in the heat of Texas in late August. Other than that the toughest game is likely at Iowa, but they lost some talented LBs to the NFL.

Once again WR is the biggest question mark. No Abbrederis to lean on this year. Wheelwright is likely the most talented WR they have, Love and Frederick the next two with Erickson and Doe likely the ones to see the most action. Hopefully Wheelwright and Love can take a big step forward; otherwise teams will likely be stuffing the box to stop the run. Two of the five true freshmen WRs are already gone - four star recruit Watkins got homesick after a week and left (he had been making questionable decisions since he turned 18), and Jones didn't make it academically and went to Toledo. One other recruit is gone (Cizauskas) and a fourth may not make it academically either (Trezy).

Running back is thin, having been hit by injuries. Jackson sustained his fourth major knee injury and is done and Jeff Lewis left the program. One of the two true freshmen - Deal or Kinlaw - will need to step up and take the role of the 3rd RB and occasionally run the jet sweep.

DL might be a little small. No more Allen & Hemer. Sounds like they may start Herring at DE and Zagzebski at NG; 277 is a little small for a 3-4 NG. If Goldberg can take a step forward that will really help. Four new starting LBs, but the outgoing OLBs weren't that talented and some were more suited for DE in a 4-3. Biegel is more talented than any of them, but needs to stay healthy. Jacobs is more talented too. Obviously no more Borland.

As light as the schedule is this year, it is exactly the opposite in 2016 - vs. LSU in the opener, then a mid-major (Akron) and a cupcake (Georgia State), then... at Michigan, at Michigan State, vs. Ohio State (then at Iowa and vs. Nebraska). Ouch.

Was Bielema coaching this game? This was on the coaches. They ran the jet sweep once - it goes for a 45 yd TD and then they NEVER RAN IT AGAIN!?!? (They ran an end-around to Gordon, but it wasn't a jet sweep because he came out of the backfield in motion, so there was no RB back there to keep the defense at home in case of a handoff up the middle.)

I just don't get it. I understand that they have no passing game right now. But why abandon a play that works so well for you? And when you have no passing game you have to run misdirection plays to keep the defense honest.

I can't believe they didn't see that fake punt coming from a mile away. I know I did. It was obvious.

Oh, and poor tackling, too.

Oh, well. Now we won't have to worry about the Badgers getting into the playoff and then listening to everybody saying Barry Alvarez put them there, etc.

Its not so much that they lost, I wasn't expecting to win going in, just how they lost. And whats up with only 3 second half carries for Gordon?

NFL Blitz has better referees.

Absolutely. Ever since the fake punt, we were 3 plays behind for the rest of the game. Even in that last defensive series, I didn't even have to watch it. Was there any doubt LSU could run for one first down and close the game out?

Also, a crossing pattern wouldn't have killed anyone. Maybe a screen. Did every throw have to be a deep ball to a guy that was blanketed?

Will you have this left guard to be the 224th pick?

They kept their base defense in on the fake punt. They were expecting it - LSU just blocked it perfectly. Kind of like how everyone expects UW to run; they do, but when UW executes their blocking they still pull off a big run.

As I said, DL may be a little small. They started Goldberg at NT, but they have no depth. I get that Ben Hemer and Logan Schmidt are walk-ons and you can't expect much from them, but at this point you need to move them back to DL, especially if Herring and Zagzebski are going to be out for a while. They need some big bodies there to stop the run. This isn't Utah State - you aren't playing Wyoming and Air Force, when you play the big boys you can't play 265 lb DEs in a 3-4 and expect them to hold up the entire game.

Wow... what is going on with the coaches and medicals staff???

Gordon was hurt in the second half so he didn't play. Ooops, he was fine, but coaches thought he was hurt...

Stave was injured. Oops, he just isn't throwing the ball well, so couldn't play.

Seems like the team isn't on the same page and lacking communication...

I'm fed up with Ludwig. Zero jet sweeps today, zero QB option plays when McEvoy was in the game, not even a WR end-around. But they run the quick WR screen/pitch three times, the longest of which goes for two yards. The LSU game, the first half of last week's game, this week; his play calling has been worse than a Bielema bowl game.

This wasn't McEvoy's fault, this is Ludwig's fault. That, and the refs who missed holding calls on both of Northwestern's TDs but call UW for a horse manure block in the back on a punt return that leads to a turnover deep in UW territory and a TD one play later.

I watched most of the game Saturday and really was unimpressed by the win. Most of the points were on huge running plays. Passing game is still abysmal. They couldn't sustain any drives that didn't have a 40+ yd play in it.

So, I was thinking, if only we could get some consistent QB play... which led me to think, what if Russell Wilson was the QB this year? *salivate*.

Adding him to Gorden and this defense would be very interesting... [smile]

The defense is overrated. It is a defense that can do, and has done, really well against spread-type passing teams. I.e., a non-power-running team. But this defense got shredded by LSU's and Northwestern's power running game. Granted, Herring was out for the 2nd half of LSU and missed the NW game, but I'm really worried about how they will fare against Iowa, Minnesota, and Nebraska's running games. Rutgers and Maryland are not power running teams. The Badgers just don't have the size/strength at DL to hold up against a big, downhill OL. Herring, Goldberg (who had no game experience prior to this year), and Zagzebski are adequate, but they have no depth. James and Obasih were recruited by Bielema as 4-3 DE's; they aren't 3-4 DEs. Zagzebski and Keefer were recruited as 4-3 DEs and have been asked to put on weight to be able to play DL (actually, Keefer was recruited as a 210 lb. OLB, but they moved him to DL out of need because of his above-average strength).

Bielema did great at recruiting for some positions, but really struggled with three - WR, QB, and DL. From 2010 through 2013 (4 classes), Bielema recruited four DTs; one chose not to play (Raridon), two weren't ranked in the top 100 DTs (Goldberg, Gilbert; Raridon wasn't in the top 100 either), and one star (Allen). Herring was recruited as a DE; no one thought he would put on 70 lbs. Gilbert left, leaving them with only Herring and Goldberg and some undersized DEs.

Fortunately Anderson is changing that. He recruited a NT (Patterson, #54) and two 3-4 DEs (Hirschfeld, #42; Sheehy, #59) in his first class. Next year he has verbals from two that could play NT (300+ lbs) and one DE.

Melvin Gordon is pretty good.

Nice way to make a Heisman statement in a big game. Too bad we didn't have the QB thing squared away earlier in the year...

Anyone want Bielema back? I sure don't. Pelini and Nebraska is a lot like Wisconsin was with Bielema. I'm glad we have Anderson.

I was secretly cheering for Nebraska to score in the 3rd quarter... Gordon may have gotten 600 of he played the whole 4th quarter.

Locked in as Heisman favorite now? Sure eliminated one source of competition tonight.

Suddenly it would seem like Gordon would be a lock for the career rushing record if he came back. Plenty of fun for years to be had debating the relative merits of Gordon, Dayne, and Ball.

19, 18, 17 and 16 all lost... Badgers should move up in the rankings this week.

If Wisconsin can win vs Ohio State and their 3rd string quarterback, I'm going to be forever wondering if a stinker vs Northwestern is the only thing that kept them out of the first ever Division I (yes, I realize there is a new name) football playoff tournament.

I don't think they are that strong of a team anyways. Even if they did beat Northwestern, they've got so many holes as a team that they would just get pounded in any tournament game.

I'm glad they'll get a bowl game. I'm disappointed that it appears with the schedule changes for bowls that it won't (likely) be on New Year's Day.

Outback Bowl, New Year's Day, taking on Auburn.

...the less said about this past Saturday, the better.
