He already did. They played their Bowl game last week.

I don't think Andersen is a conservative play at all. A small conference guy with a history of success, but all in Utah. His record at Utah State is very impressive, and the Urban Meyer connection is a big plus going forward for strategy.

If you search YouTube for his Mic'd up videos, he reminds me a ton of Gruden....

Okay, after watching some videos, reading more about him, and seeing the reaction of the Utah St fans (potential to be "legendary", "hit the jackpot", etc.), I am completely sold. This seems like a tremendous hire, with good odds of being an upgrade over Bielema. Great job by Alvarez.

More reason to like him:
Utah State coach Gary Andersen called every one of his players after news broke, going to #Badgers. Took till 2:30 am. 106 calls or so.

Calling each of his players matches up with some of the other stuff I've read about his character.

I'll be interested to see which (if any) USU recruits follow him to WI, and which Bielema recruits he's able to talk into sticking with Bucky.

Whoops. I didn't realize there were any Bowl games that soon.

Dave Heller (for the JSOnline Badgers Blog) posted a Q&A piece today with two USU beat reporters on Andersen. Definitely worth a read: Link

Q. How would you describe him as a coach?

Denniston: Energetic, passionate, dedicated. He's definitely a players' coach and the Badgers should love him. He'll do things the right way and his teams will be tough-minded and physical. Coach A will definitely put an exciting product on the field.

Graham: Everything you want in a head coach - attention to detail, motivator, disciplinarian yet players respect and love playing for him. He's direct and honest. What you see is what you get.

Q. How is Andersen regarded as a recruiter? He doesn't seem to have much - if any - experience in the East or Midwest.

Denniston: He's a very good recruiter. He started winning battles against BYU and Utah, which is normally unheard of for the Aggies. While at USU, his emphasis on recruiting focused on three areas: in-state kids, LDS Church missionary kids and Polynesian players. USU also had a pretty good Florida pipeline. He will definitely recruit well at Wisconsin.

Graham: Arguably the best recruiter in the state. He took over a program that was in ruins in the middle of nowhere and found a way to bring great athletes to the school. While his coaching career has been spent on the West Coast it shouldn't take him long to adapt to recruiting the Midwest. He has that innate ability to connect with high school coaches, players and parents.

Back to back Potato Bowls, baby!
I would imagine chips and fries were popular at the concession stands?

I have to say that I'm liking this selection more and more. I didn't know anything about him prior to the rumors starting (wasn't he that really old kicker that could still kick better than Mason Crosby?).

But the recruiter concerns didn't make too much sense to me. Wisconsin has a much bigger draw capacity than Utah St is ever going to have. And Utah St is ranked higher than the Badgers in the BCS rankings this year.

They guy seems to be a high energy and defensive minded guy. Hopefully he can select a good OC, spend a bunch of time reassuring our current recruiting class, and win his second Bowl game of the year!

I think this is a home run for UW. Absolutely fantastic hire. I could care less about the spread offense. GA seems like the type that would run an offense best suited to the talent at his disposal and no way would Alvarez hire someone that would bring in the spread. I wasn't anti-Bielema, but I honestly feel UW is better off with Andersen than with BB. Can't wait for next August. Well, can't wait for the Rose Bowl either but you know what I mean.

(And watching the intro video I can tell he's already 10x more articulate than Bielema or Alvarez.)

His o-coordinator was hired as his replacement, so it seems likely that he'll be re-hiring Canada or someone like Hammock that will be familiar with a traditional Wisconsin offense.

Canada joined Doeren at NC State:

I recall reading an article about Andersen that said the reason he went to the spread offense at USU is because he felt that was the best way to get the athletes in that he needed to quickly make a winning program. Doesn't sound like he is married to it.

I hope he keeps the fly sweep in the playbook. [smile]

He mentioned that he does want to see at least a little bit of option used. That could mean a lot of different things and doesn't necessarily mean the QB is reading a tackle and running with the ball.

In the JSOnline blog piece posted above, the two beat writers gave the following answers about the spread:

Denniston: He loves having a dual-threat quarterback, which is all he's had at USU. While the Aggies are a spread offense, they are pretty balanced. They like to take shots down the field with their speedy receivers, then grind it out on teams, as well.

Graham: He implemented the spread based on the personnel he felt he could recruit at Utah State giving the program the best opportunity to be successful. He has a sharp football mind and will adapt to an offense that will best fit his players at Wisconsin.

Yes, but based on their pursuit of Partridge (who is going with Bielema), I don't think that excludes Canada from being pursued as well. The buyouts on assistants are usually very small.

Canada was Doeren's OC at NIU in 2011; I think he has more loyalty to Doeren than to UW unless UW is willing to pay significantly more than NC State, and it sounds like that isn't the case.

That, and people like me and in my section who kept yelling, "Fire Canada!"

In an interesting development, Tyler Foreman, a safety recruit from Encino, CA, has decommitted from Wisconsin. I believe that there was a juco transfer DB that has also decommitted from Wisconsin. Apparently Craig Evans, a DT recruit from Sun Prairie, has backed off of his verbal commit to UW as well.

What is interesting is that UW is now in the mix for Lowell Lotulelei, a 4-star DT recruit from Utah and younger brother of Star Lotulelei a projected top-5 pick in this upcoming NFL draft, because of Gary Andersen. Andersen had been recruiting him at Utah State and Chad Kauha'aha'a was his brother's DL coach at Utah.

I wonder if Anderson has any connections to some of Oregon's recruits, who are probably less than thrilled that he accepted the Eagles' offer.

Well, Anderson has added his dual-threat QB by getting JUCO transfer Tanner McEvoy. Seems to have some pretty solid upside.

I would think he competes with Stave in camp for the starting job, and is going to have that "coach's guy" leg up. Both players have three years of eligibility left, btw.

Looks like they signed all of the top-rated recruits; they had a couple of decommits and a few guys who committed but didn't sign (Ramesh, Fumagalli, Raridon). You need not look any further than J.J. Watt, Gabe Carimi, or Ricky Wagner to see how important ranking is though.

I know I sound like a broken record, but what concerns me is the lack of defensive tackle prospects. It sounds like UW may switch to the 3-4, in which case they only need one anchor at NT and might be able to get away with slightly smaller DEs. But Allen and Hemer are seniors next season and Gilbert and Herring are juniors; in two years the only interior DL currently on the roster could be Arthur Goldberg. They really need to bring in some interior DL in the next class, and hopefully get Craig Evans back in the fold as well as a few others. I know that some kids can put on over 50 lbs in college, but with advanced weight training getting down into the high school level it isn't that common anymore.

I think those guys that didn't sign are actually grey shirts. So they are still committed.

I have no clue what a gray shirt is. None of those three guys were mentioned in Andersen's press conference.
