So, I'm not sure how big of a story this will be but Penn State's defensive coordinator from their glory years, Jerry Sandusky, was arrested on Friday for being a child predator. Like many of those types of guys, he was involved in a charity that gave him easy access to young boys. In 2002, after he had retired from Penn State but while he still had an office on campus, a graduate assistant saw him taking a shower with one of the young boys from this charity he ran. The GA reported this to Joe Paterno, who reported it to the AD (Tim Curley), who took no action. When asked about that by a grand jury last year, Curley apparently denied having been told about it. Because of that, the AD and the school's VP of finance and business (Gary Schultz) are facing perjury and failure to report charges.

This seems like the kind of thing that should lead to a house cleaning. I wonder if it will. Anyway, this is the reason why any talk about athletic administrators (or, really, anybody involved with the NCAA) being "so respected" or whatever disgusts me so much. Curley supposedly has a great reputation around the NCAA, yet he apparently covers up a sexual assault occurring on campus, in athletic facilities. I should point out that anybody who works with kids is told from the day they are hired that any suspected abuse must, by law, be reported to the police or proper authorities. So, this guy knowingly broke the law in order to avoid a scandal tainting his program's reputation, yet he's supposed to be a moral authority or whatever. And not only that, he totally ignored the danger that this former coach posed to children and allowed him to keep his campus office. And now he's facing criminal charges and everything came out anyway.

If Joe Pa retires, I would bet on it. Just hope it doesn't look like the reason (or part) he would leave, if he indeed does retire this year.

This story seems to be bursting today. No reason why JoePa will not/should not be canned ASAP.

Looks like it's over for JoePa and rightfully so. There is no doubt that he has to go--the program needs to be cleaned and a message needs to be sent to all coaches at all levels that abuse-related allegations must be taken very seriously. They let this go for ten years????

B10 football just keeps falling. The top two coaches from a year ago are gone, leaving behind tarnished programs. Nobody can win on the road this year--a clear sign of how weak the conference is. At this juncture, I doubt the conference can win more than 1-2 bowl games again this year.

Also, I find it highly unlikely that PSU can recover in 2011 and win 2 more football games. The Badgers should now be favorites to advance to Indianapolis.

At the end of all of this, which university will have received the worse punishment by the NCAA, Ohio State for not reporting students receiving cash/ tattoos, or Penn State for covering up child molestation?  My guess is Ohio State, and I hope I am wrong.   What happened at Penn State is infinitely worse than what Tressel was involved in, however, I just have this sneaking suspicion that the NCAA will go easy on Penn State.

The fact that Joe Pa hasn't been fired or resigned yet makes me upset.  How has that not happened yet?  Penn State should get the ultimate death penalty.  This is way worse than anything else I can remember.

One of the ESPN articles has a link to the findings of the grand jury.  To say it is disturbing is an understatement.  In one case after the mom reported the incident the police became involved and the man was just told "stop showering with children."  Its amazing how this was able to be swept under the rug for so long.

This is just all kinds of messed-up.  I'm moderately embarrassed by how much I'm following the issue now, but I guess it's that car-wreck mentality: hard to look away.  It certainly adds an extra and unfortunate dimension to Wisconsin's last home game.

The Kathleen Dunn show on WPR has been doing a fantastic show about this scandal this morning.

From the OP linked ESPN article:

Longtime coach Joe Paterno, who has more victories than any coach in the history of Division I football, was not charged, authorities said, and the grand jury report did not appear to implicate him in wrongdoing. It said that when Paterno first learned of one report of abuse, he immediately reported it to Curley, but Sandusky was no longer coaching at the time and it's not clear whether Paterno followed up with Curley.

Honestly, I couldn't stomach reading all the details in that article, but this paragraph stands out to me. Penn should rightly be punished (for sweeping under the rug). But until there is any evidence that JoePa took part in covering it up, there is no reason for he to take any blame on this.

Legally, correct. Morally, completely incorrect.

Paterno is out. He plans to coach the remainder of the season but there is some talk that the trustees will force him out this week. Will the school president be next?

There are two things I don't get about this case. The first is, why did Sandusky retire in 1999, when he was only in his mid-50's? If his retirement was forced by Paterno and/or the administration because of rumblings of this nature, everybody involved, including Paterno, should be in the penitentiary for allowing him to hang around and not doing anything to try to end his access to children and the university. And second, how did McQueary and Paterno see Sandusky around campus and not question why he was still coming around and not in jail after being caught having sex with a young boy?

And that 2nd question leads to another question- was McQueary's promotion to the regular staff tacitly connected to his not making a bigger deal of this? If the culture of secrecy around the program was such that janitors were afraid to report witnessing abuse because of fear of reprisal and an assistant knew to go to the coach instead of the police, something poisonous was going on at Penn State for a long while before 2002. But let's say McQueary wasn't scared of reprisal but went to Paterno to help him report it to the police because of Paterno's "gravitas". McQueary tells Paterno, Paterno says he'll take care of it and nothing happens. It probably became pretty clear to McQueary what the situation was.

I just don't see why he's not suspended indefinitely right away. I understand Sandusky was the perpetrator, & several other people had failures in their moral judgment, but Paterno is the leader of the football program. I'm sure there was some warped sense of brotherhood, & minimizing the actions of Sandusky to rationalize things, but there's literally no excuse. Paterno gets credit for all the good things the PSU football program has done in his time there, ostensibly because he *is* the PSU program. So you don't get to hide from that when it's inconvenient or uncomfortable.

What could he have done that would have made it morally correct?

Nothing in the sense that there was anything he could do to un-rape that kid. However, he could have tried to get some sort of police report made so that people would know that Sandusky was a child molester. Sandusky ran a charity for children, which Paterno was well aware of. One would think a person may feel some horror about that and try to do something. Not only did he not do that, he allowed Sandusky to continue to hang around the program. I saw some reports from current Penn State players who said that they knew Sandusky and worked out with him at the facilities. How a person who knew that a child rapist was hanging around with his "kids" (as Paterno commonly referred to his players) could do nothing about that is just baffling.

And if Paterno didn't believe McQueary or doubted his story, why did he promote him and keep him on staff? If you thought a guy was lying to you about how your longtime subordinate was raping a 10 year old boy in the showers at your facility, wouldn't that be enough to part ways with him? But instead, he was kept around and promoted.

The school president should be asked why he signed off on a toothless ban on Sandusky bringing children to school without asking why he was being banned from doing that. And then he should be asked why Sandusky was allowed to conduct overnight football camps for kids on Penn State satellite campuses. Paterno apparently wasn't the only one being willfully ignorant about Sandusky's activities.

I think I understand the timeline a bit better now. I was confused that Sandusky was being accused in 2002 (the incident involving Paterno) when he resigned in 1999. I didn't realize he was still around the campus and locker rooms at the time. I thought the accusation was about something 3 years prior or whatever.

I'm not trying to say JoePa was innocent in everything. Just that there are too many assumptions being made. If he knew Sandusky raped a boy, then yes, he deserves to be fired and worse. If McQueary told him something "funny" was going on so JoePa reported it, its hard to say he should have done more (not having seen it himself).  I'm sure he wished he had now.

Just reading that report, there is plenty of blame for people that were eye-witnesses that ended up doing nothing.

As for Sandusky himself, I'm Pro-Castration and I vote.

What bothers me is that he was forced to resign his coaching position at Penn State but was allowed to continue to work his with the at-risk youths at the foundation.  This was after Joe Pa and others were aware of at least some of the allegations.  Did Joe Pa have pull at the Second Mile or was this outside of his duties?  Even if he didn't, Joe Pa and others had full knowledge that he would continue to be around dozens of teenage boys and did not to anything to bring this to the attention of the Second Mile.

others may not like this opinion, but I'd almost rather have seen Paterno die while coaching than have him go out like this. The first is tragic, while the second is just sad.

It's just too bad this all had to come out now. Two months later and it would have been better. (Well, I guess it could have came out a long time ago, like, hmmmm, right after it had happened 10 years ago? Oh, wait, that would make sense.)

Penn State Fires Joe Pa

Also the Feds are now looking to see if any Federal laws were violated by failing to disclose criminal offenses on campus.  What a sad end to this man's career.  Also, does anyone else find it even the least bit suspicious that grand jury findings weren't leaked until after he broke the all time wins record?
