Barry and Brett asked students at UW to tone down the vulgar language in the stands. They are talking specifically about the "ES FU" chant. If you don't know what it is, it rhymes with eat spit duck cue.

I know this chant between sections has been going on since the late 80s at least....maybe earlier. Not sure why it's getting so much attention now. Maybe it's louder than it used to be? Anyway, just wondering what others think about it.

It's never gonna go away. It's stupid to even waste their time trying. It's only gonna make it happen more and louder. What are they gonna do? Kick out all the students?

It's harmless. I'm sure that's the thing the 6 year old kid is gonna take home. What about the 3 story beer bongs and F'em Bucky shirts? Stupid.

Don't even get me started on the moped parking tickets on campus...

As a student, there were several times when either John Wiley, Pat Richter or Barry Alvarez asked students to tone down that chant.  Didn't make a difference then, and it won't now.

I would guess it's just as much about being able to say that they tried than anything else.

It's harmless.

Supposedly the e-mail was sent partially due to some recruit's families complaining about the language.

I normally wouldn't care much (though it is pretty childish and uncreative), but if it's effecting our abilities to get recruits, then it's time for it to go.

Overall it's been toned down quite a bit.

The band no longer plays the "Hey song" (modified to: Hey you suck, we're going to kick the ...). Swingtown is only in the 5th Quarter when the stadium is 3/4 empty.

I think it was the 2006 or 2007 season when Wiley went after the ES FU chant. At that time, the argument was that he was trying to sway potential donors to give money during football games when the chant would start up. The Badger Herald ran a cover article titled "Keep Fit, Thank You" which was what a quick-thinking father told his child that the students were chanting. There was a small movement to change the chant to "Tastes Great, Less Filling".

The result? The chant was louder than ever the following week.

The only remedy for the chant is close, exciting football games. But as long as the team keeps blowing out cupcakes, the students will chant away to pass the time. The reason it drew attention now is because the Nebraska game was over in the 3rd quarter, so the students started up the usual traditions, the wave, singing, etc. There was no problem during the Ohio State game last year. It was just unusual for such a highly touted game to turn into a laugher, and the national media and the recruits are not usually around when the students are chanting away during the FCS games.

I think taking away Jump Around would end it pretty quickly.

Anyone with a 6 year old kid knows that they pick up on stuff like this very easily.

I actually heard about this for the first time from a student I know at UW that was encouraging his friends NOT to chant it. I'm proud of him for speaking up about it. It reflects badly on the school and the state.
