Im just wondering if it would be possible and/or cool to have a yearly Pac 12/Big 10 challenge in college football.

I know that teams like to schedule home games and cupcakes in the non conference season, but each year it seems Wisconsin plays at least one Pac 10 (12?) team.  Going a little ways back there have been home and aways with Colorado, Oregon, Washington State, ASU, Arizona and now this year we play Oregon State.  I just think it would be great to have a dedicated weekend, say the 2nd or 3rd weekend in September to a complete Big 10/Pac 12 challenge.  Both conferences have 12 teams now, both conferences have two divisions, both conferences.

This year there is:

OSU v. Colorado
Wisconsin v. Oregon State
Illinois V. Arizona State
Minnesota v. USC
Nebraska v. Washington

Just add the rest and we are set!

It's a cool idea, but I think you'd have a hard time getting coaches on board. For example, Bielema doesn't mind scheduling Colorado, but I don't think he'd want to play, say, Oregon or USC. I'm guessing other coaches might feel the same way.

Why not? OSU has played some darn tough early season games, and it would happen once every decade or so. The beauty of the challenge would be having a few top ranked teams going head to head early in the season.

I think it's a great idea. The strength of schedule element might wind up working in the favor of Big Ten/Pac 12 teams. I realize any loss really leaves a shot at the NC up to fate, but for example, I wonder if a team like Oregon with one loss against a Wisconsin this season would actually hurt them that much. Especially if it were a road or neutral site game.

I think the only way this works is if you match up the strong Pac12 against the weak Big 10 and vice versa. No NC contender is going to risk rolling the dice and getting one of the top teams from the other division. And that probably even means each team would have to work under a hand-shake agreement and schedule their own opponent for that weekend. Then if they don't like the match-up, the can still go somewhere else and not be locked into the agreement.

Yeah, nobody gets into sports in order to test themselves against other good teams. Everybody just desires to beat up on people who have no chance. I can't believe what has become of sportsmanship in this country, where playing teams who have no chance to win is now seen as not only normal but desirable. Hasn't anybody heard the saying "pick on someone your own size"?

Anyway, I would prefer a challenge like this take place against another conference, preferably the SEC. I'd like the Rose Bowl to remain special and if Big Ten and Pac 12 teams are playing each other as a matter of course, I think the goal of playing in the Rose Bowl gets diminished a bit.

The main problem, IMO, is that there is no college pre-season. So teams book easier teams to start out on. Otherwise, those games count at the end of the day for BCS (and overall) standings.

Maybe the non-conference schedule should start with 3 "whatever" teams. Then the Big10 schedule takes over. Then, at the end of the Big10 (or near the end), you are scheduled with an equivalent team from another division(1st vs 1st, 2nd vs 2nd, whatever).

I'm with you on the Rose Bowl and Pac10.

The problem with the Rose Bowl is that there is no guarantee anymore that it will involve a Big 10/12 and Pac 10/12 team. The Rose Bowl can take any BCS school they want. Last year it was UW vs. TCU instead of Stanford. Stanford would have been just as good of a matchup. Given this change, I would be all in favor of a Big/Pac 12 challenge.

I kind of like this idea. Have 2 conferences agree to play a de facto 1st round playoff game. But I doubt it would be allowed to happen because the BCS doesn't want any part of a playoff.
