This along with the suspensions hopefully ends Ohio State's dominance in football.

I wonder how many of his recruits from this year will bolt. Great news for the rest of the Big 10 though.  Will be interesting to see where he coaches next.

Where there's smoke, there's fire. He probably realized the truth was going to come out, and he would still like to coach somewhere....or get a job on ESPN.

The Badgers have historically had some great success recruiting in Ohio despite OSU's successes.... I hope Bielema is working the phones like a mad man this week.

In the end, Tressel did the right thing here. Hopefully this opens things up for the Badgers in the coming years to establish ourselves as one of the elites in the Big Ten.

I guess the timing of this is due partly to an article in the upcoming Sports Illustrated about Tressel.  It will be posted on SI.com sometime today.  Apparently Ohio State received an advanced copy of the article over the weekend so who knows if he resigned on his own or was going to be fired if he didn't.

I would say they already are. Michigan is going to take some time to rebuild from the destruction caused by Rodriguez. Nebraska is new to the league, but they're up and coming. Penn State has been up and down over the past few years. I don't know who else you would currently say is elite.

Indications are that Pryor is finished as well.

I still hesitate to move Ohio State below the #1 team in the Big Ten, but the door is wide open. The Badgers should now have a decent chance to win @OSU on October 29th, but it will still be a really tough win no matter what.

There certainly is now no "elite" football team in the B10. I think Wisconsin, Nebraska, Iowa, Michigan State, and Penn State all have to be considered as potential B10 champs in 2011--Penn State vs. Nebraska is my pick for the title game as of right now.

Amazing that neither Michigan or Ohio State is on that top 5 list right now.

My Nebraska friends are all concerned about Pelini being offered and taking the OSU job. If he does, he's an idiot. He's got it made at Nebraska, and OSU will probably be facing sanctions.

Reports are that the NCAA is about to launch a separate investigation into Pryor's actions as well:

Wow, pretty crazy. Although I guess there was never the impression that Tressel was running a squeaky-clean program.

Pryor is done as well, and now has three options - a) transfer to a FCS school, b) enter the supplemental draft (if there even is one), or c) file a lawsuit against the legitimacy of the draft, making himself a free agent eligible to sign where he pleases.

Wisconsin now has the potential to take over as one of the top-tier dominant programs in the Big Ten. In addition, they suddenly are in great position to dominate the weak Leaders division.

The November 26 game against Penn State at Camp Randall will likely decide who goes to Indianapolis.

Lots of talk among the talking heads that Pryor leaving OSU is probably equivalent to an admission of guilt, leaving OSU up for even more massive sanctions than before. Potrykus of the JS calling for the dealth penalty....

He's baaack

In news that surprises no one, Urban Meyer has been rejuvenated and is ready to coach again. I really hope that OSU gets creamed with sanctions, but for Urban to take the job, you'd have to think he's done his research and knows that it's not gonna be bad. Or it will be and he can spend time with his family before the program gets back to big time again.

USC got hit with a bowl ban and something like 30 scholarship reductions for one player's family accepting benefits.  OSU had several active players accept benefits.  Have they even gotten a penalty?  Don't you think it would have to be similar to USC's?  I just don't see how a few 5 game suspensions can count, especially since the head coach was involved.

To be fair, the benefits in the USC case were far more egregious than the ones in the Ohio State case. One was a mansion and luxury cars, the other was a few tattoos. Actually, I don't agree that what the Ohio State guys did should even really be against the rules, considering that they traded goods that had value for services that had value. It wasn't a bribery situation like USC, it was more like the UW Shoe Box thing from a few years ago where some business owner goes overboard trying to impress and cater to athletes.

The whole issue with college sports and not paying the athletes is a tough one.

On one hand, you see the college making a lot of money off of a football or basketball team. Also, its pretty common for Bo Ryan to show up in various commercials. Not using the UW name, but who would care if he wasn't the UW BB coach?

On the other hand, I shudder to think about how ugly college sports would become if they didn't have some reigns put in place and athletes were making millions just to attend USC...

Does anyone know what is currently legal? Tuition is paid, of course. What about books, room, board?
