Became official last night, and some Bearcats players are (understandably) upset. Can't blame them for feeling betrayed when you turn in the best season in program history and now you have to face last year's national champions with an interim coach.
"He went for the money," Gilyard told The Associated Press. "I'm fairly disgusted with the situation, that they let it last this long." Players weren't told of Kelly's decision until the end of a team banquet, nearly three hours after the news first broke. A few blinked back tears as they left. "We already knew what he was going to say. We weren't giving him a round of applause or anything," tight end Ben Guidugli said. "It's like somebody turned their back on us. We brought this whole thing this far. We've come this far. To have someone walk out now is disappointing."
There's also an extended video clip on ESPN.com, where Mardy Gilyard basically sums up the team's feelings by basically saying, "He didn't do anything, he just called the plays, we were the ones out there making plays."

Isn't that pretty much what every coach moving to a different program is doing? I don't like it, but if you're a college athlete at a "mid-major" college, if your coach is good, the other schools will come calling.

I've never understood why coaches hired away will sometimes leave prior to their current/former team's bowl game. What sense does that make?

The reasoning I've heard is recruiting. The bowl games are used as recruiting tools.

Kelly didn't go for the money. He's Irish Catholic.

A struggling big program brings in an offensive minded coach who succeeded in the Big East to implement the spread offense. That sounds familiar...
