Does this prompt a serious re look at the division splits within the Big Ten to a more geographic format? Also tricky because football and basketball split somewhat differently. One also has to wonder if ND might not be left holding the bag as the conferences shift underneath them. Granted they are happy right now sitting at #1. 14 just seems like a stop over on the way to the 16 team super conferences.

I gave up on college athletics years ago, but still yearn for the simplicity of Ten = 11.

Maryland and Rutgers will both be Leaders. Illinois to the Legends division.

My feeling is this move will be good in the long term but right now it seems like the B1G is playing catch up this time. It's definitely a big win for the NY and DC area Wisconsin alumni, but a loss for traditional rivalries.

Any speculation on the inevitable 15th and 16th teams? How about Texas and Kansas? Or North Carolina?

I'm a little irritated the Big 10 sold out for money. I didn't really have a problem with them expanding to 14 or 16, but I would have preferred they stick to their midwestern roots. It seems odd they'd turn down Missouri so they can add Maryland.

Regarding the divisions they are screwing it up again. The divisions were based entirely on Michigan and Ohio St being in separate divisions so they could play in the Big 10 championship game. Ask the ACC how that worked out with Miami and Florida St. If Michigan and OSU are going to be in separate divisions they need to move their annual game out to the beginning of the season which nobody wants. So why not just put them in the same division. Who cares if they don't meet in the championship game. Nobody really cares to see them play two weeks in a row anyway.

I think the divisions should be very obvious now. Michigan, Michigan St and Ohio St need to be in the same division. So do Penn St, Rutgers and Maryland. That's 6. Each of the 8 remaining teams has a natural rival. Iowa/Nebraska, Wisconsin/Minnesota, Indiana/Purdue and Illinois/Northwestern. So just take two of those combos and put them in divisions. It would make sense to keep Nebraska and Wisconsin out of the already tougher Michigan/Michigan St/Ohio St division so to me to obvious division split would be as follows:

Michigan Penn St
Michigan St Maryland
Ohio St Rutgers
Northwestern Wisconsin
Illinois Minnesota
Indiana Nebraska
Purdue Iowa

How a side note, how long before UConn joins the ACC?

I think the league stays at 14 until someone else adds two more. But if we do I don't think Texas or UNC are options. Texas probably won't go anywhere without Oklahoma. And UNC probably won't go anywhere without Duke. Duke and UNC would be intriguing and would be a HUGE additional to the basketball portion but it would further water down football.

I'd actually like to see them go with Boston College. Good academic school. Big TV market. Plus (and I'm sure I'm the only one who cares about this) but it would be a huge addition to Big 10 Hockey. I'd also have to think Virginia would be an option. I also remember hearing Georgia Tech's name floated around last time.

UVA makes a ton of sense athletically, geographically, academically, and fiscally. They are my strong preference for #15. As paul mentioned, Georgia Tech's name constantly gets floated around, and this time is no exception.

#16 will always be open ideally for Notre Dame, but I'd be thrilled with UNC or Oklahoma. They went money over quality here, which I'm ok with if the next two make up for it.

EDIT: Paul makes a great point about hockey. I wouldn't be surprised if they look strongly at two hockey schools for that reason.

The Big Ten seems intent on adding only AAU member schools. I know Nebraska isn't one now, but they were when the were accepted into the Big Ten. So I think that, along with geography, limits the realistic options to the following schools:

Kansas
Virginia
Iowa St
UNC/Duke
Georgia Tech
Texas
Pitt

I list Duke and UNC together because I don't think one would go without the other, but you never know. Iowa St doesn't seem "prestigious enough" and the Big Ten is already in the Iowa market. I think Texas stays with the Oklahoma/Texas Tech/Baylor/OK State group. I don't know if Pitt will want to switch conferences again so quickly. So IF I knew the Big Ten was moving to 16 and IF I had to guess I'd guess they'd pick two out of Kansas, Virginia and Georgia Tech.

As I figured it looks like UConn is going to replace Maryland in the ACC. Surprisingly though now apparently Boise St and San Diego St and considering backing out of their move to the Big East and staying in the Mountain West and BYU may be looking to go back to the MWC as well.

Good. I think all these super conferences, if they're going to go with greed over tradition, should revoke the right to keep their name. A school in a city on the Pacific Ocean being in the "Big East" is simply asinine.

I understood the benefit of adding Penn State and Nebraska to the conference - lots of football and football-related revenue from big schools with lots of tradition/success and big fan followings. I don't understand the benefit of Maryland or Rutgers; I don't see what those schools add to the conference, with the possible exception of opening up more East Coast markets for recruiting.

My understanding is that Notre Dame wants nothing to do with the Big 10 - they have their own TV deal for football and they went with the Big East for basketball because their recruiting base is/was East Coast Catholics.

Delaney squashed the rumors today of the divisions realigning by simply moving Illinois over and acknowledged that geography probably needs to play a bigger role in determining the new conferences.

Moving Wisconsin and Illinois over should be a no-brainer, and taking Purdue with probably makes the most sense. Move the two Michigan schools back and things align about perfectly IMO.

DC/NYC/Boston TV markets for the Big10 Network. That is huge.

Now Tulane and East Carolina to Big East.

So Louisville, Cincinnati, Memphis, Tulane, East Carolina, Houston, SMU, Central Florida, South Florida. The Big East is now literally former Conference USA schools plus a few random others like Boise St and Navy.

In three years the Big East will be a basketball-only conference.

I lived in the NYC TV market most of the last two years - Comcast already had the Big 10 Network. I'd bet that DC already had it too, and the number of traditional Big 10 school alumni in those markets already watching the Big 10 Network is a lot more than what they will pick up with Rutgers and Maryland.

Lots of chatter the last couple of days about Georgia Tech to the Big Ten. Normally I wouldn't put much stock into this, but it's basically how the Maryland/Rutgers stuff seemed to start just a couple of weeks ago.

I've heard that as well. I wonder who the 16th team would be? UNC? Virginia? Would the Big 10 go for the home run and shoot for Texas (doubtful) or Oklahoma (Non AAU member)?

Not sure how accurate this is but I thought I'd think it. The Big 10 is alleged to be sending an invite to Virginia soon and will round out the conference with UNC or GA Tech. The SEC is also considering UNC and Duke but also Virginia Tech and Clemson. Then depending what happens the Big 12 will then add 6 ACC teams. So imagine a Big 12 with FSU, Clemson, NC St, Miami, and Virginia Tech. That leaves the ACC with teams like BC, Louisville, Pitt, Syracuse, and they'd presumably go after Cincinnati and UCONN. Looks a lot like the Big East.

As far as the Big 10 goes I'm not sure who I prefer. UNC brings tremendous basketball history and fits the mold of keeping all Big 10 schools geographically connected. However Georgia would be a huge recruiting boost and get the Big 10 into the South. It'll be interesting to see if any of this actually happens.

I cant see unc and duke going different ways. No way espn lets that happen./half blue
NFL Blitz has better referees.
