And now it looks like TCU is considering going to the Big 12 instead of the Big East.  Geographically it obviously makes more sense.  If this happens you have to imagine the Big East is all but done as a football conference.  They can add all the Armies and Navies they want to, but they're going to end up losing their AQ when it comes time to refigure that (2014 I think) and once that happens they are no better than the WAC.  Good move by the Big 12.  Hopefully they can hang on to Missouri.

Doesn't look like the service academies are going to join up anyway: https://twitter.com/#!/DanWolken/status/122080076249579521

If the Big East crumbles, it looks like Texas wants Notre Dame to join the B12 for non-football: https://twitter.com/#!/ChipBrownOB/status/122030914522984449

I don't think that would be a good move for Notre Dame, given the instability of the conference, but it would let them remain football independent, which is goal number one.

And I think Missouri would be stupid not to hook on with the SEC while they have the chance. There is legitimate danger they would get left behind if the B12 eventually crumbles, so they should take their opportunity to move to another major conference while they still can. It would be good for the B1G to have them stay in the B12 though, because then they remain an option to grab down the road.

I wonder what will happen to the remaining Big East football teams.  Louisville, West Virginia, UConn, South Florida, Cincinnati, and Rutgers are not going to be ok with what will essentially become a Conference USA type conference.  And even if they do form a league with teams like Central Florida and East Carolina, I imagine they'd all be looking to bolt as soon as they can.  I still think this 16 team conference thing is going to happen, which is why I think the Big Ten should act.

If the Big East crumbles, it looks like Texas wants Notre Dame to join the B12 for non-football

I think I'd be ok with Notre Dame joining the Big Ten for all sports minus football.  There would have to be some sort of condition though that if/when Notre Dame's football team joins a conference they would have to join the Big Ten.  There would also have to be some sort of financial hit for Notre Dame.  But it would give the Big Ten hockey conference another legitimate team and it is just a better fit all around.  I can't imagine Big 12 teams would be very happy about having to go to South Bend in April to play baseball and softball.

I also wonder about the Big 12 and who they will add.  I assume they'll eventually want to get back up to 12 for the championship game.  Even if Missouri stays that's only 10.  BYU?  SMU?  Boise St?

I could argue that three teams would deserve to be in the title game with one loss ahead of an undefeated Boise St.  LSU because they've played one of the toughest schedules in recent memory.  Alabama because they are that good, even though the wins at Penn St. and Florida shouldn't be considered as impressive as they are, and Oklahoma because the Big 12 has some good depth and they won at FSU, though FSU has now lost 2 in a row.  But anyone else, in my opinion, should not be put ahead of Boise St. if they lose.

I'd only consider Alabama or LSU with one loss and if that loss came in playing each other, that's it.

Like i said before, i don't question that Boise is a really good team because i think they are. For example, i think the Badgers are worthy of being a top 5 team, but if they were to face Boise on a neutral field, i think the game is a toss up, not that UW should definitely be favored. The only teams on a neutral field that i think they definitely should be underdogs to are Oklahoma, Alabama, and LSU.

Their weaker schedule though would simply have me put any undefeated big conference school ahead of them and probably a one loss Bama or LSU.

I for one am rooting for Boise St.  I don't think this is going to be their year again because I think the winner of the LSU-Alabama game will go undefeated and I think Wisconsin will go undefeated.  Stanford and Oklahoma might as well.  Oklahoma's win at FSU is looking less and less impressive as FSU has taken a dump lately.  I would actually LOVE to see Boise St in the Sugar Bowl against the loser of the LSU-Alabama game.  I'm not sure they could win but it'd be nice to see where they stand.

I'd also like to see the Big East give it up.  The service academies or Central Florida isn't going to save them.  It may keep the conference alive for now, but you know Louisville and a few others are eventually going to leave.  I want to see an Catholic League basketball conference with Marquette and all those other Big East basketball schools.  It is sad though.  A lot of these conferences would have been fine if these schools didn't panic and head for what they thought would be greener pastures.  Va Tech, Miami, and BC left for the ACC thinking the ACC would be a football Mecca and it's an average football conference.  Had they remained in the Big East, the Big East would have been a good  football conference.  And when Boise St decided to move to the Mountain West, the Mountain West would have been a heck of conference had Utah and BYU stayed.  Utah, BYU, TCU, Boise St, San Diego St.....that should have been a 7th AQ conference.  I honestly think if the NCAA would have been willing to change their requirement and allowed a championship game with as few as 10 teams instead of 12 this realignment wouldn't have been nearly as dramatic.

And in other news:

A 22 school league from the remnants of the Mountain West and Conference USA.  This is giving me a headache.

This is getting a little ridiculous.  BYU and the Big East can't agree on a deal and now apparently the Big East is shooting for San Diego St.  It was bad enough the Boise St, which is over 1000 miles from the nearest Big East School, is joining.  But now San Diego St.  It's literally a cross county trip.  Most games that SDSU would play on the east coast would start at like 8 or 9am Pacific time.  I would love to see the Big East do one of two things.  Invite East Coast teams like Temple, who was once in the Big East, and Navy, plus a Florida team like Central Florida and then try to convince current members Villanova and Georgetown to move up to D1 football.  Or I would like to see them go away entirely.  The ACC can suck up two of the remaining teams, probably UConn and Rutgers, and Louisville can go the Big 12.  I don't really care what happens to South Florida and Cincinnati.  They can go back to Conference USA.

The Big East is should not be allowed to call themselves the Big East anymore.  They should have to call themselves Conference USA part 2.

The Big 10 and Big 12.....just reversed.  No but really, I was just kidding about their name.  I don't care what a conference calls themselves.  I just wonder why the Big East feels a school from San Diego is the best fit for their conference when there seems to be more logical choices.

If Arkansas beats LSU, the division champion is decided by the head to head matchup of the two highest teams.  Who should that be?  Looking at quality wins.

Alabama: @Penn St, Arkansas, @Auburn
LSU: @ Alabama, @West Virginia, Oregon, Auburn
Arkansas: @LSU, Auburn, Texas AM, South Carolina

I'd rank the impressiveness of wins like this:
Most impressive win: Arkansas at LSU
Next: LSU at Alabama
Next: LSU vs Oregon
Next: Alabama vs Arkansas
Next: LSU at WVU
Next: Arkansas vs South Carolina
Next: Alabama at Penn St.
Next: Alabama at Auburn
Next tie: LSU and Arkansas vs Auburn
Last: Arkansas at Texas AM

Just looking at these schedules how, I'd rank them like this.  1) LSU 2) Arkansas 3) Alabama.  That means Arkansas would go to the title game against Georgia.  Unfortunately, one of the crappiest things about college football is not just IF you lose, it's WHEN you lose.  Arkansas lost first, then Alabama, then LSU (assuming Arkansas beats them).  I just don't see how you can drop LSU down to #3 with their schedule.  I think you'd have to move Arkansas up to #1 and move LSU down to #2.

How would you guys rank the three SEC teams should Arkansas win?

I should have added a smiley to mine. Image At this point, the name just goes back to tradition. Its pretty silly how some of these conferences have mixed and matched, but its money that drives, not logic.

Yeah and the funniest thing about this, is that had BC, Va Tech and Miami not left the Big East, the Big East would be a stronger football conference than the ACC right now.  Virginia Tech has pretty much been a one man show in the ACC for the past few years.  I liked that conference and as dumb as it sounds I'm sad to see it go the way it's been going.

Speaking of A&M, Mike Sherman got fired on Thursday. I'm sure Aggies fans are just as relieved as Packers fans were when the axe finally fell on him previously.

I haven't paid much attention to what Texas A&M has been doing. Was he that bad or just time for a change? Sherman was actually a very good head coach for the Packers. He just stunk as a GM.

I couldn't disagree more. Sherman presided over a Packers team that got pretty good results. That doesn't mean he was a good coach.

Anyway, Sherman was 25-25 in 4 years at A&M, with only 1 year with a winning record. It's not like they were a powerhouse under Franchione but Sherman managed to even make him look good by comparison.

A&M is going to get thrashed in the SEC West next season.  The phrase "be careful what you ask for" comes to mind.

When are the Big East and ACC going to get it over with and combine. I can foresee FSU leaving for the Big 12. I can also see Louisville leaving for the Big 12. The ACC should take 3 Big East teams (UConn, Rutgers, and Cincinnati) and have two 8 team divisions.

1) BC 1) Maryland
2) Pitt 2) UNC
3) Syracuse 3) Duke
4) UConn 4) UNC
5) Rutgers 5) Wake Forest
6) Va Tech 6) Miami
7) Cincinnati 7) GA Tech
8) Virginia 8) Clemson

They could call the new conference the Big Atlantic Coast East. Not much of a football conference but darn good for basketball.

That wouldn't really be a bad football conference, either. No real powerhouse program(s), but plenty of good competition imo.

Looking at it again that actually wouldn't be a bad conference. The problem is with the SEC and Big 12 teaming up and the Big 10 and Pac 12 already teamed up, they'd have no conference to compete with really.

I really liked the old Big East and if they could have somehow combined with the new Big East for a 12 team conference of 1) UConn 2) Rutgers 3) Syracuse 4) Va Tech 5) Pitt 6) West Virginia 7) Miami 8) BC 9) Louisville 10) Cincinnati 11) Temple 12) South Florida that would be a better football AND basketball conference than the ACC. Ironically enough the whole realignment started with the ACC raiding the Big East and now those two are far and away the two weakest conferences due to further realignment.

At this point I'm almost hoping for 4 "super conferences" with the champions of the 4 making the football playoff. That would essentially make it an 8 team playoff with conference championship games counting as the first round.

In a fairly suddenly developing story over the weekend, Maryland has accepted an invite to become the 13th member of the Big Ten:

Rutgers expected to follow as #14 shortly....
