The logo isn't terrible but I think they could have done a much better job.

My complaints are:

1. The divisions and scheduling setup.
--- Just completely idiotic in every way. Protecting rivalries when you could have just put them in the same division makes scheduling more unfair and unflexible. Also it could RUIN not save the Mich-OSU rivalry. I don't see whats not fair about.. UW/Minn/Iowa/Nebraska/Illinois/Northwestern and Mich/OSU/PSU/Indiana/Purdue/Mich St.

2. Division Names, just because it is so stupid

big gap

3. Logo... They just could have done better I'm sure

Really, you're that strongly against the logo? Here are some secondary, but official, versions:

Now seeing the second logo, you can see why there's a "1" instead of an "I" and the G is round in the main logo.

I don't love the logo, but I don't think it's any better/worse than the old one, really.
I actually like the "B10" one. Use that logo as the main one that goes on jerseys/helmets, name the divisions "Black" and "Blue" and be done with it.

Yes. Those other ones are slightly better but they are still lackluster, at best.

Look at the logos for each of the big 6 conferences and tell me where the Big 10's ranks from a design standpoint:

The Big XII will probably have to change their logo to some extent. Still, I think the bottom 2 logos clearly belong to the Big 10 and the Big East and at least the Big East's logo has 2 things going for it- 1: the red, white and blue color scheme (a successful color scheme, as Gregg Easterbrook likes to point out), and 2: the fact that it looks a little dynamic with the motion line and the jaunty angle on the font. The Big Ten's is just uninspiring and embarrassing. Think what a slap in the face such a horrid logo is to the art & design departments at all 12 schools. It's just shameful that the conference didn't choose something that was at least a little interesting.

The old logo blows this 'blah' one out of the water. Even though, at this point, I think it's just kind of stupid to keep calling the conference the Big Ten.

Amen.

If the Leaders and Legends division names are for some crazy reason retained after all, I will hope to hear "nananananananana-LEADER!" from the UW student section every time Wisconsin hosts a "Legends" school in any sport.

That is how ill advised these choices are.

Big Ten could revisit "Legends" and "Leaders"

Apparently the names garnered a 90% disapproval rate. Wow. (Unsure of where the number came from, in fairness) At least Jim Delaney is smart enough to realize something should be done.

Same.  Call it the Great Lakes Conference or something.  10 of the 12 teams are actually in a state that has a Great Lake.  Keeping the Big 10 name with 12 teams basically says they don't have the ability to count.

What's ridiculous is that a committee would have approved these pretentious & stupid names to begin with.  Really, no one had the guts to stand up & say, 'Hey guys, these names really suck & could make us look bad.'?

Me. It's going to be on all the fields, courts, sometimes the jerseys, etc. I also assume they'll rebrand the Big Ten Network to match this new logo. It would be nice to not have to look at such an ineptly designed logo any time I watch a Big Ten event.

It's all about the brand, more than anything.

They almost certainly would have done what the Pac is doing if the Big 12 didn't exist.

Seems like a lot of teams are down this year, especially Ohio St.  Penn St.'s offense is awful.  I think UW is going to run away with that division.  In the other one, even Nebraska looks pedestrian.  I thought Michigan St was good until the laid an egg against Notre Dame.  Iowa is meh.  Michigan....i love Michigan but they still have a lot of issues.  I think it'll be tough to beat Nebraska twice, but UW may be able to go undefeated this season.

Going forward, the nice thing for UW is that they get to play the clearly number one program in the Big Ten every year, assuming they rebound fine off the Tressel issues and thus it's always going to be a really big game for fans to look forward to. Plus, i find it extra fun beating the Buckeyes because many of their fans feel that program has a god given right to a Big Ten title and it irritates their fans about the number of times Wisconsin has beat them. That said, in years where OSU are loaded with talent, it could prevent even good Badger teams from winning their division.

My other issue is that when Penn St. is fielding less than stellar teams as has generally been the case for awhile now, the Leaders division can lack the type of games that Badgers fans can get excited about watching. For the most part, games against Purdue, Illinois, and Indiana aren't going to generate a high level of interest. I know they don't for me, while in most cases i'd be amped to see UW play Michigan, MSU, Iowa, or Nebraska. I know we'll play those teams on a rotating basis over the years, but i just wish we were playing all four pretty much every year.

Personally, when looking at all of those conference logos, I would put the Big 10 second. The rest are either too busy (ACC), look like they were made on Microsoft Word (XII conference)/Big East, or have an ugly color scheme (in my opinion) SEC.

I like the creativity of the Pac 10. It does very well. Other than that, the rule for graphic design now-a-days is that simple is better (it's one of the reasons google is so successful). The Big Ten's logo is simple while still managing to be creative enough to hide the 10 in the name.

I don't want my conference logo to look busy or have an ugly color scheme. Simple is better, and I like the simplicity of the current Big Ten logo.

Just wish they'd change those stupid division names.  Legends and Leaders sounds to arrogant, like something the SEC would do. What's wrong the Big Ten naming it's divisions the Big Ten Blue and the Big Ten White?  This is what happens when you hire a P.R. firm to do your thinking for you.

If you go back to the beginning of this thread, the hand wringing over UW playing OSU and PSU is kinda funny.

Anyway, here are (presumably) the new divisions based on what Barry said the other day about geography:

B1G WEST

WIS
NEB
NW
IOWA
ILL
MSU
MIN
----------------

B1G EAST

OSU
MICH
PSU
PUR
MD
RUT
IND

The only outlier is MSU heading west. Seems weird they would not be in the same division as UM, but then you have to split up Purdue and Indiana. Someone is gonna get screwed either way.

I'll add that Wisconsin's path to any title game is now certainly much easier than previously. Not cutting down any team in the division, but based upon recent history, the winner of the Nebraska/Wisconsin game has a huge upper hand. Certainly beats trying to gain a tiebreaker on Ohio State, Michigan State, Michigan, and Penn State. (Don't know how Rutgers or Maryland will fare either).

Agreed. Things are cyclical in football, but I don't see Purdue, Illinois, or Minnesota ever becoming powerhouses. Maybe they might sneak up there for a year or two but not on a continual basis. Northwestern is about as good as they are gonna get - bowl every year and maybe once in a while they compete for a title. Iowa is sort of an enigma. They were really good and now....they aren't. I think Kirk is going to go bye bye shortly and who knows what that will bring. Nebraska is Nebraska. I don't think they'll ever reach the levels they did in the 80's, but they will always compete. Kinda similar to Wisconsin in that regard - not sure UW will ever be "elite" but they will always be good.

I feel bad for Indiana. Even though their coach has made strides in recruiting that is just a brutal division for them.
