Funny, the calendar says there was, but I'll be darned if I can remember anything about it.

I do remember waking up at about 3 am on Sunday morning with a really bad upset stomach. Do you think something happened Saturday that maybe we're blocking out?

Nice bounce back in the bowl game. Very entertaining game. Lets get a qb for next year!

NFL Blitz has better referees.

Definitely some frustrating moments, but a lot of those were execution on the QB or receivers. The game plan seemed less conservative.

Can't wait for our local guy, Austin Kafentzis to get to Madison. He's going to be a good one!

Please let Houston or Gillins step up and take over QB.

The good news - they return almost all of their WRs and DBs, and were able to redshirt all six of their OL recruits. The bad news - they will be very thin at LB and DL is again a question mark; the experienced DL are undersized except for Goldberg. Hopefully two of Sheehy, Hirschfeld, and Patterson can step up and provide depth. I think the best thing for Alec James is to drop 15 lbs and move to OLB.

I can understand hoping for someone better, but Stave is not bad. Inconsistent certainly, but on good days he can win games when the opposition zeroes in on the running game from time to time, and he usually is much better at protecting the football. He has a fair bit of in game experience, and I'm optimistic that he could potentially put together a really good senior year with better coaching than Gary, I need an athlete even if he can't throw the ball, Anderson. I'm also perfectly OK with open competition.

If Ohio State wins, will people stop the SEC is the best conference nonsense? Even if they don't their bowl performance is hardly impressive given what the top teams in the SEC have done.

9 TD, 10 INT, 53.6% completion % this year - I'd say that's worse than "not bad".

Strong agreement with the SEC comment though.

Statistically this was Stave's worst year, and 9 of those INTs came in the 2 loses and yesterday. Given how Andersen took his job away for a guy who clearly can't do more than run the football, coming off a year with a completion % over 61% and a 22TD to 13 INT ratio I'll give him slack for being rusty against Northwestern. So I'll stand by inconsistent and not bad.

Back onto the SEC, I've been largely unimpressed by the playoff concept largely because it doesn't really stop any controversy. I guarantee TCU absolutely thinks they were robbed... and it just continues unless the playoff numbers get large enough that the bubble teams are clearly bad enough to not have much of a chance (like most pro sports). That objection aside this year the playoff certainly helped break the SEC stranglehold. FSU certainly would have made it into the BCS game by going undefeated, and then cause the SEC is so tough Alabama likely beats out Oregon. They might just win me over if they started putting bowl games back on Network TV.

That's my point. I watched the Northwestern game - those INTs, like two of the three yesterday, were because of bad decisions, not inaccurate throws. I vividly recall in the Northwestern game he threw an INT in the end zone instead of throwing the ball away, costing them at least a FG and possibly the game; that's not rust, that's bad decision-making. Like throwing deep into double-coverage yesterday - bad decision-making. And he didn't lose the job because he couldn't run - he lost the job because he was inaccurate. I vividly recall him not being able to complete many short throws of <10 yards, just dump-offs to a TE or RB, that were at their feet or over their head. His 53% completion percentage backs that up. And the reason Stave didn't have more INTs is because in most of the other games he didn't have to pass - they ran all over everyone else. While he looked good against Iowa and Minnesota, in the three games in which he had to pass to win he threw 9 INTs.

Stave wasn't even in the top 10 in passing efficiency in the Big Ten this past season; besides the obvious, he was worse than O'Toole (ILL), Rudock (IOWA), Leidner (MIN), Gardner (MICH), Sudfeld (IND), and Brown (MAR). The only starting QBs in the Big Ten he had a higher efficiency rating than were Hackenberg (PSU), Appleby (PUR) and Siemien (NW), and I think anyone would take Hackenberg over Stave in a heartbeat. Based on adjusted QBR, if he would have qualified he would have been no higher than 63rd in the nation. If you look just at PASS EPA, he would have ranked 108th in the nation; he gets a higher adjusted QBR because of the great OL he plays behind - his SACK EPA would have ranked 7th in the nation if he qualified. (McEvoy's SACK EPA would have ranked #1 in the nation if he had qualified).

I'm sorry, but the stats say he was definitely worse than "not bad".

It's a cycle that starts with the media. A few SEC teams are ranked in the top 10. The SEC then plays their non-conference schedule against football behemoths such as Western Carolina, Tennessee-Martin, Presbyterian and South Alabama. They predictably go undefeated in those games keeping their rankings high.

Since they don't play anybody, nobody knows how good they really are. So if Alabama starts at #2, losing to #10 LSU, then LSU moves into the top 5 because they beat a top 2 team and Alabama only moves down to say #6 because they lost to a now top 5 team.

But then two weeks later LSU loses to #23 Ole Miss. Now Ole Miss moves into the top 15 because they beat a top 5 team and since LSU lost to Ole Miss, maybe we underrated them a little bit and will only drop LSU to say #8. Meanwhile, Alabama plays two bad SEC teams in Vanderbilt and Kentucky, winning both and climbing back into the top 3.

That's why there should be non-conference games only in the first 4-5 weeks of the season and those games should be weighed heavily because it's the only time you can see how a team compares to the rest of the conferences until bowl season.

You still want to play South Alabama? That's fine. Teams like that need the payday from Power 5 schools to stay afloat. But you better follow that up by scheduling say a Clemson and an Arizona State so we can see how you compete against good schools in other top conferences.

Is Cardale Jones that good? Three dominating wins in a row over top 15 teams.

I don't think so. He did well, but certainly the star of that tan is the o-line and RB. They ran and ran and no one could stop them. Jones kept the defense honest but didn't carry the team by any means.
