The Wisconsin offense showed itself finally. What a game against Purdue. Ball got the Big Ten TD record too.

Indeed nice to see the offense. Things also look quite a bit better overall now that Oregon state is ranked 10th

Just another disappointing loss vs a team that Badgers should beat.

Time for another round of "Fire Bielema" idiocy.

No, but Canada needs a talking to. This is the second game where his rectum got tight which resulted in ultra conservative play calling. Not once do I recall seeing the Badgers run the fly sweep to White or Gordon; once they ran an end-around to Abbrederis but that was it from what I remember. Not once did they roll the QB out right and throw back to the TE, a play that has worked really well for them. When Stave got hurt and they brought in O'Brien, and what do you think MSU was anticipating? Let's see, new QB, so they are probably going to hand the ball off to Ball which is exactly what they did, and Ball got stuffed. MSU has a good defense, but it doesn't help when you call a very conservative game plan. A conservative game plan against a good defense usually yields few points; when you play not to lose, you usually do.

They clearly had(have) no confidence in O'Brien's ability to throw the ball, or his decision making. That's a problem now that he's probably the starting QB the rest of the way.

Ugh. Broken collarbone. I hadn't seen that until your post made me go look it up.

That's a shame; fortunately he's only a frosh in terms of eligibility. He was looking good.

They've said that it has actually been a really close battle for the starting QB job. Not sure how accurate that is, but to me it looked like O'Brien was handcuffed by the play calling, or that O'Brien was/is afraid to audible for fear that if he audibles and makes a mistake it will be back to the bench with him.

Let's go back in time to 2003. UW vs. #3 Ohio State. Starter Jim Sorgi gets knocked out of the game, and backup Matt Schabert comes in. UW is deep in their own territory so OSU is thinking the Badgers will be conservative with a backup QB in the game. Lee Evans runs a safe short stop/slant route and the OSU CB tries to jump the route... only they pump fake the safe quick throw and Evans runs a go route and Shabert hits Evans over the top for a 79 yard game winning score. Similar situation here - starter gets knocked out, but does UW try to outsmart the defense that is keying on the obvious (handoffs to Ball)? No, they go conservative. You can't shut down the playbook when your backup QB comes in.

Maybe the conservative play calling is a result of lack of confidence in O'Brien, but I don't think whether or not they run the fly sweep (which they didn't run once the first three games of the year) has anything to do with who the QB is.

I would bet it's lack of confidence in O'Brien. He hasn't looked very good so far imo. Peavey's comment on his decision making is the first thing I'd point to.

O'Brien won the starting job while wearing the red jersey. Once he got into game situations he has shown extreme happy feet, and refuses to stay in the pocket to make decisions or give receivers opportunities down field.

Against crappy Northern Iowa, he goes 19-23, and only throws for 219 yards. He was even worse against Oregon State -- 4.5 yards per pass.

Per Bielema, O'Brien and Phillips will compete this week to start vs. Indiana. Bye week really couldn't have come at a better time for UW, since it gives them time to figure this out.

The Badgers, IIRC, ran one reverse/"fly sweep" against MSU, but ran one on the first play against Indiana, three in the first quarter alone, and by my estimates at least 10 during the entire game today. While Indiana's defense is not what MSU's is, I don't think it is any coincidence that the more they run that play the more it opens up the running game for them. The change in QB wasn't the reason they put up 62 today. The Badgers open up the playbook against lesser teams, but against the better teams they get tight and conservative, and that's what has cost them.

That's an interesting observation, which I hadn't noticed and certainly hope doesn't remain true.

Also, I feel like I've seen some baaaad Indiana football teams over the years, but this game was... wow. Their defense was startlingly bad.

Not pretty along the way, but today's win got them where they wanted to be- playing for the B1G Championship in Indy.

I don't expect the next two weeks to go as well as today did, but hopefully we can give them and then Michigan or Nebraska a game.

I believe Indiana made a 21-point improvement over the 2010 game...

My memory sucks. Sucks. How could I forget 83 points?

But I still think the Hoosier defense turned in a pretty special performance yesterday. At times it almost seemed like they were trying to miss tackles.

Wisconsin had a four-star DT recruit from Indianapolis decommit from them a couple of weeks ago. If he had any intentions of going to Indiana, hopefully this game will get him to reconsider.

This post proved unfortunately prophetic today. By the 3rd quarter I wanted to reach into the TV & punch Canada & Bielema. By the 4th quarter, well, the cuss filter makes anything else I'd have to say moot.
