If endaround's scenario happens, the top 2 teams couldn't play each other under the current BCS rules. A conference can get only 2 teams into the BCS in a given year and Georgia would have one of the SEC's spots. Whoever was ranked number 2 in that situation would be left out in the cold.

That would be so awesome!

Never mind, the BCS has an exception written into its rules in order to stop something like that from happening. So, the SEC could conceivably end up with 3 bids this season. Oh well, it would have been funny, too bad the BCS foresaw this possibility.

Yeah I thought they changed that at the same time they realized they no longer have to keep a seat open for Notre Dame every year.

Actually, the Badgers were a big reason that this came about, as in 2006 they finished with 1 loss, and -- I believe -- 7th in the BCS, but behind both Michigan and OSU -- so no BCS game for them, due to the rules at the time.

So not really anything to do with the championship game but get this.  Since USC is ineligible for the Pac-12 championship game, second place UCLA gets to go.  UCLA, after losing by 50 to USC today, is now 6-6.  When they lose to Oregon in the championship game they will be 6-7, which I believe makes them ineligible for a bowl game.  So a team plays in it's own conference championship game yet isn't good enough to qualify for a bowl (and it takes a bad team not to qualify for a bowl).  Only in college football.

Only in college football.

Meh. MLB and the NFL at times have entire divisions that stink so badly that the division leader makes it over other teams with better records. The Seahawks last year nearly became the first team with a losing record to make the playoffs.

They were 7-9... finished 8-10 after beating the Saints and losing to the Bears.

For some reason, I thought they finished 8-8. So it makes my point even better.

This decision really irritates me.  Oklahoma St. played in a better conference and had a harder schedule than Alabama.  Oklahoma St. had more quality wins.  Alabama played LSU, at home no less, and lost. I don't care if they lost by three.  I don't care if the lost in overtime.  They lost.  Oklahoma St. lost in overtime too, on the road.  The only argument Alabama can make is that Alabama's loss was a better loss, which is a pretty poor argument if you ask me.  A loss is a loss.  And let's be honest.  With the way the system is set up had Oklahoma St. lost before Alabama did, Oklahoma St. would be the pick.  Oklahoma St. deserved to be in the championship game. I am getting really tired of the SEC bias.

I'm still kind of perturbed that the Badgers were, essentially, 2 fluke plays away from being in the BCS Championship Game.

Well, one fluke play and one terrible defensive play on the road.

Cost them a Championship game, and a Heisman

If you think about it though, they were also one "running into the kicker" penalty away from being in the Capital One Bowl.  The penalty did not affect the outcome of the punt at all and Michigan St returned that punt to like the two yard line.  A touchdown or chip shot field goal would have more than likely given MSU the championship. Beside, even if the MSU didn't catch that Hail Mary at the end of the first game, there's no guarantee Wisconsin would have won in OT.  Remember the game was tied when that happen, Wisconsin wasn't winning.

The reality is, UW doesn't deserve to be in the national championship game because of their defense and special teams. They have a Capital One Bowl defense and an Insight Bowl special teams.

The team who really got hosed is Michigan State. They beat Michigan and were 1-1 against UW, but Michigan gets a BCS bowl and Michigan State gets the Outback bowl. They moved down simply because they played in the Big 10 Championship game while Michigan sat at home. Ridiculous.

I don't get the logic in having Alabama play in the title game. There should be a stipulation that you have to win your conference championship. I get the argument that the SEC is the best conference in college football, but Oklahoma State won their conference. LSU already beat Alabama. To me, there doesn't seem to be any wiggle room.

I completely agree with you.  Michigan benefiting from not playing in a Championship game is ridiculous.  The whole damn system is flawed.

I agree with system being flawed (in many, many ways).  But in reality, Michigan St. isn't even eligible for a BCS game because they are not ranked high enough.  So it's not like the Sugar Bowl picked Michigan over Michigan St.  I'll admit I am a Michigan fan, but this isn't the first time things like this have happened and it certainly won't be the last.

Welp, Alabama it is.

The bowl season had already ended, in my mind. No momentum left. This game provided little interest and I barely watched it.

Here's hoping for at least a Plus-One in the near future.

It was a good game between the two best teams, and the correct national champion was crowned. There's no doubt going to be a ton of complaining(mainly from people who didn't even really watch it) the next few days, but for the most part it's unwarranted.

It was a horrible game between the two best teams from the best conference, and the correct national champion was crowned. 5 field goals and a garbage time touchdown. I mean, this from the conference that seems to think they are so much more faster and explosive than everybody else in college football. I'm biased because I live too close to Gainesville...but if I wanted to watch ANOTHER SEC Championship, I would have threw in a DVD of the one played in December. College football fans got hosed on a potentially great game with different opponents because the system still rewards the opinions of sportswriters to determine it's Champion.
