Ryan Mallett strikes me as Jay Cutler 2.0. I would not want to spend a high pick on him.

Andrew Luck is staying in school. Carolina must be PO'd.

I remember when similar things were said about the 49ers when Matt Leinart returned to school. Before you rip on that comparison, please recall that Leinart was considered a can't-miss after his junior year (and national championship).

Bad move for Luck, for so many reasons. He has nowhere to go but down from here, and that comment isn't meant to take anything away from his talent. When you seem like a lock to go 1/1, you take it.

As for J.J. Watt, clearly he recognizes his potential, knows something we don't at this point in time, and is going to cash in on a big pay day. Obviously I wish he would return to the Badgers, but don't blame him for his decision given the money involved.

I think Watt's going to lose quite a bit of money when it's all said and done...even with the inevitable new rookie salary scale.  I think he'll be a high second round pick.  If he came back and had a first team All American season, he'd be in the top 15 next year, at least.  Just my opinion, we'll see.  I'll definitely be rooting for him, and he's definitely ready to play on Sundays, I just think not playing for money next year would have made him more money when it's all said and done.  There's no guarantee that his first contract won't be his last.

I know the Steelers are looking hard at Watt, as he would be about the perfect fit as a DE in the Steeler defense -- They are concerned he won't fall past Washington -- that said, a lot could and will happen between now and draft day -- but I'd be surprised if Watt makes it out of the 1st round.

I'm sure, like most people, he's assuming a new rookie salary scale will be in place and make a pretty significant difference over what he would have gotten normally. I agree that if you're a consensus #1, you take it, but I don't think his situation is quite as bad as Leinart's. Leinart lost a ton of money, then showed up and stunk, and will likely never be able to recoup what he lost. I actually wonder if he would have still ended up #1 after his junior year after going through all the workouts and such.

Will you have this left guard to be the 224th pick?

Not surprisingly, John Clay is also declaring for the draft. This kind of reminds me of the P.J. Hill situation a couple years ago, when he basically declared because it looked like he was going to end up third on the depth chart. Kind of ironic that Clay was part of the group that pushed Hill out, and now Clay is basically being pushed out by Ball/White. It's a little disappointing that he never really seemed to get going this year, but they probably don't beat Ohio State without him, and his sophomore year was one of the most incredible years I can remember watching.

I don't expect him to be much more than a 4th or 5th round pick, but if he can get healthy, he might be a steal for someone. How scary would it be if someone like Detroit decided to pair him up with Jahvid Best?

Had Clay played the entire season and not missed the offensive explosions that catapulted Ball in to star status, what would he have finished with stats wise?  1,500 yards 20 Tds?  I'd say that would have been the low end of his production if he played all 12 games.  My point is that I don't see why you'd say he didn't get going.  How many games had Ohio State not allowed a 100 yard rusher before Clay did it?

That said, I see him as a fourth or fifth rounder as well, but a guy that could have a decent career in the NFL.  And yes, Detroit with Best would be a perfect fit.

I just think not playing for money next year would have made him more money when it's all said and done.

I agree completely here. On the Sidelines TV show a week or two ago, there was a general consensus that while they all thought Watt would go pro, they also felt that he would be helped a ton by having another year with our great D-line coaches to learn more pass rush moves. I think the smart play for Watt was to stay.

Clay is not a surprise, and is probably the right decision for him. He could have come back and had a much better collegiate season before going pro, or he could have lost even more carries to the guys behind him as crewcrazy mentioned while taking another chance with his health/injury issues. Watt is a huge loss for UW, but they'll fill in for Clay with little to no trouble with the guys they have (plus Brown coming back next season as well).

I love JJ Watt, but in case you missed it, Auburn's Nick Fairley is a bona fide top 5 player, no doubt about it...a force.

I was hoping Watt would come back for another year to try and get closer to Fairley's level.  It's not even close right now.

Fairley strikes me as one of those guys who will take plays off.  I think he's going to bust due to lack of work ethic in the NFL.  I have no great reasons for that, he just puts out that vibe from what I've heard/seen of him.
