As usual, not a lot of questions but the few questions are big ones:

1) Who is going to step up at QB? We can't expect O'Brien to be Wilson. But everyone else (Budmayr, Phillips, Houston) is hurt.

2) WR has a lot of young guys, but will any of them step up opposite of Abbrederis? Is Garner healthy? Not one senior in the group, and Abbrederis, Garner, and Duckworth are the only juniors.

3) Once again, interior DL is dangerously thin. Kohout (the only D-1 scholarship player to come from my hometown in a long, long time) had to quit because of two strokes caused by migranes. Costigan and McNamara were moved to OL (sounds like they are high on Costigan at OG). But that only leaves three interior DL - Allen, Hemer, and Bryce Gilbert - who have seen the field, and only two more (true freshman Arthur Goldberg, and walk-on Jacob Ninneman) on the entire roster. Herring, at 6'3" 275, isn't big enough to play interior. Any injuries there would be devastating.

4) With the lack of experience at QB and WR, will teams stack the box against Ball?

Discuss...

Curious how 6'3"/275 at the college level isn't big enough to play the interior D-Line. Not saying I know it is, but it seems like a stretch to just dismiss him out of hand based on his listed measurements.

Teams have been stacking the line against Wisconsin RB's for 20 years now almost, yet they still get their yards. I don't see how this year with Ball will be any different.

Pederson will get his targets at TE, I think he may take a step forward, and if Austin Maly can get on the field he might surprise a lot of people.

Again, it will come down to the defense, which disappointed to a huge extent last year, especially in big games. Will Borland build on his 3rd team all-American & first team all-big10?

I'm excited, but feel like this is a 'reloading' year for Bucky. They still have a great chance at the Rose Bowl, obviously, with the OSU and PSU suspensions they should cake walk into the big10 title game.

Montee got assaulted by 5 guys on campus last night. Just heard it on Rome. That's not good on any level. Hope he's able to recover and quickly!

It wasn't big enough in 2008 when a similar sized Mike Newkirk was asked to play interior DL because of lack of depth at the position. That resulted in 3-5 in the Big 10, beating Cal Poly by one and Minnesota by 3 at home (giving up 35 and 32 points respectively), and 7-6 overall. Michigan racked up 172 net rushing yards, Ohio State 183 (excluding 42 sack yards - actual 225), Iowa 254, and Cal Poly 276.

Everyone has 300lb interior OL now, especially in the Big Ten. That, and Herring has been playing DE.

The Big 10 Championship Game counts as a postseason appearance, right? OSU will not be allowed to play in it even if they win the division, correct?

There are plenty of defensive tackles in major college football who aren't 300 pounds. It's not the NFL. That said, yes it would be great if all you had was 300 pounders that could move to choose from to play inside. That's probably not realistic. Patrick Butrym was a 280ish player. Jason Chapman was 280ish. Dan Moore was below 280. If Warren Herring is your fourth interior lineman, is 275 (and growing) really all that concerning?

Mike Newkirk was probably 260.

Butrym and Chapman were listed at 290, but they were far from star DTs. Moore was 280-285, but Moore played DE, not DT. And like I said, Herring has been playing DE as well.

Herring could certainly play interior on passing downs, but not rush downs on a regular basis. Maybe they are trying to bulk him up to play interior, but all I've ever seen/heard is him playing DE.

That is correct. No OSU or PSU in the Big 10 Championship this year, and the division we're in (can never remember which one) is between Wisconsin, Illinois, Purdue, and Indiana.

See you in Indy.

Dan Moore started at DT his senior year. Schofield and Watt were the ends.

And Herring is now up to 285.

Initial depth chart released:

http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/wis/sports/m-footbl/auto_pdf/2012-13/depth_chart_event/depth_chart_20120807aaa.pdf

Herring has apparently bulked up and now is 2nd string DT... but he is temporarily out with a concussion. They are still so thin at the position that they moved 6'3" 250 Jake Keefer temporarily to DT to cover while Herring is out. Fortunately they have verbals from two DTs next year, one of them a four star recruit.

The next big OL stars for UW apparently are Tyler Marz - redshirt FR listed as backup LT, and also was Offensive Scout Team POY last year - and true freshman Dan Voltz as both are listed as 2nd string. They are really high on Kyle Costigan at G for him to be listed as first string his first year on offense.

Two years ago Manasseh Garner seemed too good of a player to be a 5th/6th WR as a junior. I think he should have stayed on defense as a strong safety.

Thanks LouisEly & Roscoe Chill for the responses about DT size/weight.

Sorry for the extremely delayed response -- I forgot my password for LL.net... and forgot you can just have a new one emailed to you [rolling eyes]

Underwhelming start to the season yesterday the offensive line didn't really play that well against a smaller team. O'brien looked pretty good in his first start.

79 yards in three quarters. The new O coordinator might not make it through the year at this rate. It's been a long time since I can remember their offense even being close to this bad and they are doing it against a middle of the road Pac-12 team.

McCarthy strikes again. You call a timeout on 3rd and 1 to do THAT?

Well, the new o-line coach has not:

Really hope we don't regret this and it isn't just a reactionary move. Seemed well-respected coach when he came in here.

Canada must be next on the chopping block. Will he last the season? Seems doubtful as of now, but we'll see.

It might have been a quick trigger on the O-line coach but the line has looked terrible against two smaller defensive lines. They haven't held up well for the run or the pass, I know that they have some new starters coming but its still been a pretty slow start especially considering the competition. It's going to be interesting to see how they do against Big 10 competition.

Bielema's comments to the press yesterday made it sound like the o-line coach's philosophy went against what Canada and Bielema want to do offensively. Very strange.
