Not entirely surprising, but not on the radar because people had him as a safety. Still surprised the Packers passed on Malcom Brown given the lack of 3-4 DL in this draft and fragile status of Raji (injuries) and Guion (legal) and both being on one-year deals. You can get CBs later.

All but Thompson on the board for ILBs, but with the Packers drafting after SF might be hard to come by.

TT channeling his inner 1999 Ron Wolf with DBs in first two rounds. Another former basketball player, Rollins played one year of college football. Not sure how to read this; does it mean they have concerns about the corners on their current team, or does it mean they are confident in their current corners that they can have Rollins spend a year (or more) learning the position before being ready to contribute?

Montgomery doesn't surprise me much, as he is one of the most experienced returners in the draft. Only 13 career punt returns, but returned two of those for TDs and has returned three kickoffs for TDs as well. Doesn't bode well for at least one of Abbrederis or Janis. My guess is that it's Abbrederis.

Surprised that with three sixth round picks they didn't use their 4th or 5th to move up in the 3rd to grab Carl Davis.

This fits my view of the team weakness (CB) coming into the draft. I predicted they would take two CBs, but I'm surprised that they took both this high.

The WR pick does puzzle me though. That pick does make it sound bad for Abbrederis, since they are similar players. If you needed a returner, Randall does it and Abbrederis does it. You could have picked Dawson (ILB) at that point too.

Granted, since ILB is a 2 down position (mostly), I still like the concept of Matthews inside on running downs and outside in the nickle/dime. That seems to maximize his skills and protect him a bit from battling OTs on running plays. So, looking at it like that, they didn't have a huge need at ILB. I wonder if Matthews will have the "green dot" helmet this year.

Plus, you have Carl Bradford coming in his first full year at ILB. And I still like Pennel at NT. Both had some "sparks" in preseason last year. Give them a good development step in the 2nd year and they could be pushing for playing time.

After the contract Randall just signed, I doubt we'll ever see him involved in the return game again.

Through the first 5 rounds, i am pretty happy with how the packers have done. The one pick that puzzles me is Montgomery. They drafted jared abbrederis last season to return kicks and he never got a chance to see what he can do. The WR competition in camp will be one of the most intense position battles in the NFL. I love the Ryan pick,, reminds me alot of Hawk. Hundley makes sense, its about time that Ted actually got a decent backup that he can develop, instead of relying on players like Flynn. The 2 corners look to be very athletic, and most importantly were playmakes in college.

While it isn't an obvious need its also hard to fault Ted for drafting a WR, our development model there is pretty good and without a great TE we really need 3 legitimate healthy threats at receiver to keep the offense functioning at a high level, so competition for the #4 spot is good. I really like getting a QB with good tools in the 5th round, that is excellent potential value.

Yeah you can't really argue with Ted's success at drafting WR's. Plus they needed to upgrade the return game BIG time.

After thinking about it overnight, I was reminded that Montgomery is 6', 220. That's RB size.

I would not at all be surprised if Montgomery is the 3rd down "RB". Just like they used Cobb out of the backfield a lot, I can easily see Montgomery being that WR/RB combo, in addition to the primary returner. If that's the plan, I'm starting to like it more and more.

Overall, good draft through five rounds. Not sure what TT was doing in the 6th. Christian Ringo is an interesting guy; will they have him try to drop 20 lbs and play OLB or will they have him try to put on weight and be a Mike Daniels clone? (I was *this* close to listing Kennard Backman as a UDFA.)

Hearing a lot of chatter about teams grabbing players specifically for two point conversions. Many believe the XP is going bye bye. Maybe this is one of those players?
