Kinda hope Pack take a flyer on John Clay. I know it's a homer pick but he'd be a nice big RB to utilize on short down plays.

I have a weird feeling about Clay as Mr. Irrelevant.

As for the Packers, I like the run on D-line at the end here. Get some big bodies out there. Lawrence Guy looks like he has an interesting skillset.

Will you have this left guard to be the 224th pick?

3rd round? I don't know who writes these things, but this makes it seem like a giant leap. I won't criticize, but somebody talk me off the ledge.

So why by default do you trust someone at NFL.com over TT? We do people always grab some analysis from ESPN, NFLN, or Bob's Bear Belly Sports Blog and wail in torment that our GM just blew it (not limited to GB fans and TT)? Remember all those "expert" analysts are like weather forecasters, rarely does someone actually go back and say "Kiper, you really blew it with Ryan Leaf at #2 of your draft. You picked Mandarich over Sanders? What were you thinking?" If we did, their turnover rate would be just like the GM's turnover rate.

Other NFL draft pet peeves:
- "That wasn't a need pick"
- "We could have gotten him X picks later!" (Bigger the peeve when X approaches 0)

I like to play arm-chair GM as much as anyone, but come on...

The selection of Green sounds a lot like a larger version of Brandon Jackson. Limited starting experience and some raw talent. Will need some seasoning, but sounds like he might be ahead of Jackson (as a rookie) playing as a 3rd down back.

Seems like the 6th rounders had a lot of awards and all-american mentions... very interesting.

I feel bad for Clay, who didn't get drafted.  Signing bonuses for UDFA rookies aren't much, and they don't get any base salary if they don't make the team.  I remember that Sam Shields' bonus was $7,500 which was quite a bit for an UDFA, to keep him from signing with a team like the Bears.  If he doesn't at least get on a practice squad somewhere, he won't have any more cash in the bank than you or I at the end of this process.  It's not like he was playing college football for USC, Ohio State or Auburn.

Really surprised Lawrence Guy was there in the 7th... I figured he'd be gone in the 5th. He must have some character issues because he had decent production and I think was a true junior.

I understand D.J. Williams to an extent, but not the UNC TE in the 7th.  Would rather have taken a flyer on a QB or a safety for depth.  Let's hope that this isn't an indication of the real diagnosis on Finley...

Great pics, thanks for sharing LouisEly. I'm guessing you had a blast, knocking one more thing off of the bucket list.

Good call to everyone both here and elsewhere calling Randall Cobb. I'm happy the team has a legitimate return threat, which IMO was the team's biggest weakness on their SB squad. I was mildly surprised to see the Packers load up on offense as much as they did. I don't read too much into the TE picks, as TT and MM have pointed out that these kind of players are looked upon on special teams.

I do wonder if the team is going to make a push towards re-signing Jenkins when things open back up, although I figured Mike Neal was drafted last year as early as he was to become Jenkins' eventual replacement.

Yeah, thanks for sharing the pics! Very cool.

I agree with Colby that Jenkins' odds of coming back probably look better as of today than they did a few days ago.

McCarthy commented on the TE situation when asked about the ton of them now on the team:

I’m a fan of the tight end position. I just think that the body type of tight ends and outside linebackers, there’s versatility that they bring to the table. And it’s more about offense than defense, I’m referring more to special teams. The tight end position is going to be a very competitive situation. They’re all athletic, they all have the ability to play from the backfield, can play in the No. 2 slot as a receiver and give us the diversity that we would like to continue to play with. I think it was something that we really felt good coming out of training camp last year. We did have the injuries to Jermichael (Finley) and Donald Lee early and our Tom (Crabtree) and (Andrew) Quarless did a good job of growing in those particular packages as the season went on. You just want flexibility. That tight end position, the running back position gives you that flexibility to move in and out of one-back and two-back concepts and get as much continuity as you can with your offensive front and your perimeter group.

At the risk of saying this way too early, McCarthy's offense has a chance to be legendary. He and Ted built this offense around flexibility, and they can run just about any play at any time. It sometimes feels like they have fifty guys just on offense that keep rotating in and out and confusing defenses.

As for the TEs, I wouldn't be surprised to see them carry only four WRs to go with four TEs. Finley, Crabtree, Quarless, and one of these guys. Finley is almost interchangeable, as is Quarless to an extent, so the position designation really only matters for the
Pro Bowl.

Very, very cool LouisEly.  It's especially great that it was a knowledgeable Packers fan like you that was interviewed.  I always worry that Packer fans will be associated with the drunks at the bar that make the local news, so it's nice that when the national spotlight is on, we're represented by someone that knows what he's talking about Image Congrats!

Pretty cool, LE. And how can anyone resist those baby blues on Goodell?

I did some You Tube searches on Randall Cobb this morning and the dude is just sick. He's blazing fast. Not to mention extremely well spoken. He seems like a great kid. I'm fired up to see what he can do for GB. The one thing they've missed the last few years is an explosive guy on offensive (I don't know if I'd categorize Jennings as explosive.). Cobb certainly could fit that bill.

This offense could be scary good next season.

I like the Packers draft.  I trust management and the coaching staff.  Obviously they have a clear vision on what they want to do on both offense and defense.  And while many, including myself, thought that we would see more front 7 defensive players taken earlier in the draft, they instead chose to fill depth and roles on offense - giving more protection, depth, and playmakers to Aaron Rodgers is never the wrong move in my opinion.  And like others have already stated, it would seem that the Packers feel much more comfortable with their DL and OLBs than I would have thought.

I've come around to the Alex Green pick.  The Packers must have thought that he was one of the best pass catchers available.  It would seem that they envision him as a 3rd down back at least initially.  It's hard to say what type of runner he will be in the NFL without those huge gaping holes to run through that he had at Hawaii.  But he's a big guy with soft hands and he should be able to help the offense.  I've read that he has a fumbling problem, so hopefully in addition to pass blocking, the Packers can coach him up in that regard.  I was actually sort of hoping that the Packers took DT Christian Ballard with this pick as he seems like a great fit as a DE in the 3-4.  I thought that they could try to address the 3rd Down RB role with later picks, but in Ted I trust.

The Packers also spent 2 picks on their TE/H-Back position(s) with DJ Williams and Ryan Taylor.  One of the more surprising developments of the draft for me was seeing Virgil Green fall to the 7th round.  I've read that because of his size and incredible athleticism, Virgil Green seemed like a perfect fit for such a role.  But every team kept passing on this guy, so there must have been some red flags.

I liked the Lawrence Guy pick.  I expected him to more of a mid-round pick and he certainly has the size and strength to warrant it.  He left college a year early and I suspect that if he would have stayed and performed one more year that he would have gone higher in the draft.  I'm excited to see if he can break into the DL rotation right away.

It looks like Cobb ran quite a bit of wildcat at Kentucky. That would be some interesting versatility to bring to the playbook. Apparently he can hold on FG/PAT attempts as well. Multi-dimensional threat.

There was one play I saw on a highlight film that was ridiculously Madden-esque where he ran backwards 15 yards to avoid defenders, only to then run forward for a 40 yard gain.

Overall while I was surprised by the offensive focus in the draft, I think it was a good draft. Hopefully they can get this labor dispute resolved and get back to football.

Plus, it shows him hold for the XP
