Per Boss' agent, the Packers have been in contact with Boss Bailey.

Seems smart enough; go for the guys who can play on the strongside but would not necessarily get paid too much cash for the amount of playing time they would get. The Knee concerns with Bailey probably would drive his price down, and he could be replaced with Poppinga if opposing teams tried to run Bailey to the ground by making Green Bay commit to the standard 4-3 for extended stretches.

I'll say this; the idea works on paper.

I liked Bailey coming out of college and think he could be a good contributor for us. He's an athletic guy who could do well for us especially on passing downs.

First of all, i really question if Baily is better than Poppinga and could take the starting job away. Also, what do you mean by saying opposing teams trying to make Green Bay commit to a standard 4-3 defense for extended stretches given we do run a 4-3?

I'm not against trying to sign Baily for depth, but my guess is he'd likely be a backup. I also wonder if Bailey plays special teams and if so, does he do it well. If he ended up a backup, Bailey almost for sure would need to play special teams.

Well, I think it's clear the Packers intend to upgrade the strong-side LB, like many of us have hoped they would try and do.

I agree. It'd be nice to see Bailey signed to a low-risk deal and see what he can do in training camp. Does anyone think if Poppinga loses out on a starting spot we would trade him?

I'm gonna agree with Danzig on this one. If we're going to start looking for linebackers to challenge Poppinga, they better be able to play special teams. Otherwise they're just locking up a roster spot. Unless it's someone that is clearly better than Poppinga, which I don't think Bailey is, he better be a wedge-buster or something.

Doubt it. Poppinga would be a pretty valuable backup and I seem to remember him being a decent special teams player. Plus I don't think we would get anything for him in a trade.

He also doesn't seem like the kind of guy that would flip out if he lost the starting spot. I think he knows where he stands, and if he doesn't, all he has to do is look at how many linebackers the Packers have been looking at lately and realize that Barnett and Hawk are starting.

Will you have this left guard to be the 224th pick?

I agree he'd be a valuable backup, but I'm just wondering after starting for a few years if he'd be alright with being a backup/being demoted.

I don't think he'll be the kind of guy to flip out either. His contract is nice and doesn't hurt the Packers by any means. I just wonder if a team would give us a 5th round pick considering his contract is nice and he has another year under a team's control after 2008 (he'll be restricted). His age doesn't really help though since he is our oldest starting linebacker.

Age + lack of upside + mediocre starter = probably not worth a 5th round pick

If a team doesn't need Poppinga to start, they won't trade a draft pick for him. If they need him to start, then they're probably a young team that wants draft picks and won't give them up for a mediocre linebacker.

I'm not saying he's worth that -- it's not always a matter of what a player is worth. If a team would make the deal, I think the Packers would do it. I have to believe Poppinga has some value and even though I'm not high on his ceiling we could do a lot worse than Poppinga.

People around here act like Poppinga is the worst linebacker in the history of pro football. With only five LBs on the roster last season they need depth on the outside. That's what they are looking for - depth. Not much sense in paying a ton of money for someone who is only going to be a two-down and special teams player.

Bailey is like the Anti-Poppinga. He can match up with TE and RB's in man coverage, but isn't going to be as stout as a run-defender. IMO, Bailey is a slight upgrade over Brady, so long as he can stay healthy. Since Bailey is faster, he's going to be able to make more open field tackles, and makes for a better help defender / gang tackler.

FWIW, I'm not a Poppinga fan, but I do believe he'd be better served playing in a 3-4 (where he wouldn't be put in coverage situations nearly as often).

Actually I pretty clearly said that I think he's a mediocre linebacker, and I don't think that's all that debatable. He's not making any pro bowls anytime soon, but he's also not a backup for the Bengals. I was only saying that I don't think we could get a draft pick for him.

As far as the Bailey thing, if Bailey stays healthy and shows even some of the potential that he came into the league with, I think we would have an upgrade at linebacker in Bailey, one heck of a special teams player in Poppinga, and some much needed linebacker depth with Poppinga as a backup and Hodge coming back next season.

Will you have this left guard to be the 224th pick?

Hodge coming back next season.

Are we certain that's the case? His knees are in pretty bad shape. I had really high hopes for him, but he wasn't that fast of a guy before his knees acted up. Any update on his status?

While that statement clearly is exaggerated, I don't think there's anything wrong with people wanting the Packers to upgrade what appears to be a weakness on the field. I'm not sure if Boss Bailey is the right answer, as many people have admitted that they still like the guy for his reputation coming out of college, and I clearly remember how upset people were that the Packers passed on him in favor of Nick Barnett several years ago, but someone like Brandon Chillar or an early draft pick might be in the team's future, and as I pointed out before, if the Packers are pursuing players like Bailey and Chillar I think it's clear that they too view the strong-side LB as a position in need of an upgrade.

I don't think Poppinga is hurting the team, but anytime you can improve one position, even marginally, you're improving the team.

Not to mention the fact they would be improving their depth at the position drastically. They didn't have a player that I would be comfortable starting for an extended period of time backing him up last year.

Bailey can play any of the linebacker spots so at worst he'd be a very good backup for us at all three spots.

To me, the fact that the Lions aren't real interested in bringing Bailey back says something.

Maybe he'll be cheap. I liked him out of college and I wonder what kind of deal he's looking for. I do wonder (like has been mentioned) how well he'd fit in on special teams.

Remember, this is the Lions we're talking about- their personnel evaluation isn't necessarily a strength. Image
