An early diagnosis of Harris' injury is that it might be a ruptured spleen. He's going to get a second opinion.

Hoooo boy. Image

That really sucks for Al. I realize he's going for a second opinion because he wants to play, but I hope he doesn't try to push it. Those aren't the kinds of injuries you take chances on.

Best of luck to Al in his recovery. He has honestly been one of my favorite Packers since he came here.

On the Packers side of things, I think this kind of injury last year would have crippled the team, but I'm a little bit more confident this year that they can overcome it. Both Williams and Blackmon have been making plays in the secondary, and I think they can handle the job. Maybe not quite as much as Harris could, but at least enough to get us to the playoffs. And who knows, maybe he can recover in time to play in some nickel and dime packages come playoff time.

Will you have this left guard to be the 224th pick?

I agree that Williams and Blackmon look better this year than last. These are the types of crazy injuries that plagued the 2005 team, but for whatever reason didn't happen in 2007.

Even still, corner was probably the position at which they could least afford to lose a starter. Brutal.

And wow, what a painful-sounding injury.

Yeah, any time I hear the word "ruptured" I cringe a little.

And I would say D-line or quarterback are more important to not have an injury (or another one in the case of the D-line). We have 3 competent safeties, our nickel back from last year moved down the depth chart because Williams has been solid and Blackmon is back, plus an early round draft pick that I don't believe has even been activated yet. I would honestly call our secondary one of our strengths this year.

I believe your talking about Patrick Lee. Everything I've read has said he's behind where he should be in terms of talent right now so I doubt he'll make an impact this year. I like Lee and I think he could be a solid CB. He may just take a little more seasoning/developing than some players.

I would honestly call our secondary one of our strengths this year.

I think in terms of potential I'd agree with you. In terms of right now though, I think the secondary depth is concerning. Most teams don't have even 2 good CBs let alone a 3rd CB that can start on a regular basis. I'm not huge on Harris, but he can be a shut down type corner and I think asking Williams/Blackmon to match that would be difficult.

I think I see this (assuming he's out for the year) breaking down into four points:

- The division appears (not sure if the Bears are up or down this year yet) to be the Packers. I know I picked them to win 6 games I think and a large part of that was injuries this year that didn't happen last year and Rodgers. Aaron looks pretty good so knowing that I'd say a playoff year would be likely. Now without Harris that's more difficult, but I think this team can still win the division.

- The schedule will be the Packers' friend. They face the Bucs, Falcons, Seahawks, Titans, Vikings, Bears (twice), Texans, and Jaguars who IMO don't have stellar passing games or in the Seahawks case are beat up right now.

- How will teams react to Harris' injury? My guess is that Williams/Blackmon will be challenged early and often. This should make it interesting for the Packers in terms of game planning. One of my biggest worries this year was the pass rush and so far it's better than what I thought it'd be. Keeping a solid pass rush will help Williams/Blackmon.

- It's a bad situation, but I think we'll get to see if we have a future starter in Williams or Blackmon. There will be growing pains and blown coverages, but maybe Williams or Blackmon plays well most of the year and we know what we have down the road.

Is anyone else wondering if Harris' career could possibly be over? Chris Simms suffered a somewhat similar injury (we don't know all the facts so that could be off) at about the same part of the season in 2006 and missed the rest of 2006 and 2007. The quarterback position might be different, but Harris isn't a real young guy and this could threaten his career or threaten his level of play/role with the team.

Wow this really hurts our defense. Harris and Woodson were HUGE in allowing the defense to concentrate on other areas. I think we should look at acquiring a CB if all possible because this could get ugly I think. Think prior Woodson when teams would pick on Carroll constantly to avoid Harris. But I'm pretty sure they will be better than Carroll.

I like Williams and think he can do a solid job, we'll see though if Blackmon can't hold up at nickle corner without giving up to mny big plays

Really bad news for Al and for the Pack overall. Harris was one of my favorite Packers and while I think the dropoff to Williams and Blackmon is substantial, it's not as bad as things could be. Like T Bone mentioned, it can't be as bad as having Carrol out there.

Lito Sheppard? (I apologize if the spelling is off). What does it take to get him? I'd give up a 3rd round pick easily to get him. Harris is what he is and I'm not as high on him as others, but he's aging and this is a big injury. We don't know when or if he'll be back to where he was. We may need to find a starter for this year and beyond. I'd like to go after Lito.

Lito was my first thought when reading this thread as well. If this ends up being true, that's an option that should definitely be explored.

I thought the Eagles were looking for a 2nd rounder before the last draft. But honestly, with the potential that the Eagles have this year, I can't see them trading Sheppard for anything less than a player. No reason for them to trade the best nickel back in the league if they want to make a deep playoff run.

I see what you're saying, but Lito has made it known he wants out. The Eagles are one of the very few teams in the league that is stacked with starters in their first 3 CBs. It probably takes a 2nd round pick and I'd give that up. The Eagles do have potential, but Lito doesn't appear to be happy and sometimes it's addition by subtraction. At least Lito has shown up and done his job...unlike Mike McKenzie. You bring up a good point jazzytrav. It will be interesting to see if they'll deal him, but from the Eagles perspective getting a 2nd round pick isn't a bad thing.

I personally think the Eagles give him up for a number 2, but jazzytrav does make a good point -- what value do the Eagles have on him now?

Lito for whatever pick the Packers get in the Favre trade. Let's do this. Image

The last time we gave up a 2nd rounder for an Eagles corner it turned out pretty well... that being said, I think it is highly unlikely the Eagles trade him for anything other than a player at this point in the season. Maybe we can talk them into a 2nd rounder and Bush, or straight up for Patrick Lee.

I think Blackmon is very underrated at this point. He had some nice returns that were nullified by penalties, and I think he can be a very good corner. He's short on experience due to the injuries, but I think he has talent. I recall screaming for the Pack to draft him a couple of years ago, and it is looking like a steal for a 4th rounder (sorry, had to toot my own horn). I'm more worried about safety, with Bigby and Collins nicked up.

He asked to have it removed? I know he gets bonuses for being on the active roster but come on, how much does he really need that money? I guess spleens just aren't as important to the body as they used to be.

I think Al is confusing his spleen with his appendix...either that or he's just that hardcore. I say option B. Al is tough as hell.

My dad lost his spleen in a snowmobile accident before I was born. Al would be seriously jeopardizing his long-term health if he elected to remove it. Since the spleen produces the vast majority of white-blood cells that combat disease, my dad is pretty much always sick - it just varies by what degree. He's had near-fatal pneumonia twice. It's a pretty important organ to hang on to, dude.

Harris to return after bye?

On my fantasy football 'news wire' there's a report from KFFL (IRRC) stating that Harris had some tests done today and his 5/8" tear of his spleen now looks like a scratch. I guess week 9 is the target for the return. If the Packers somehow pull out the Colts game (this isn't a knock on the Packers...I watched the Colts yesterday and what they did to a real good Ravens defense was impressive) and get Harris back, they all of sudden might move up the ropes in terms of being a contender. I think the Packers have been fortunate enough so far to not face too many great passing attacks, but even with some of the teams left that lack a good passing game Harris should help generate more coverage sacks/pressure on the quarterback which should lead to more turnovers.
