G Matt Rotheram and LS Jesse Schmitt released.

Surprised by Rotheram, I thought they were pretty high on him. Maybe one of those "knew he wasn't going to make the team, give him time to catch on with someone else" kind of things. But if they were high on him, wouldn't they try to get him on the practice squad?

I think a lot of the pre-season fluff pieces tend to be exactly that... fluff. Decisions made on the field tell 10x what the interview blurbs will ever tell.

Might be a big change at the backup G positions this year. Doesn't sound like Lane Taylor is playing well either.

So long to both Mortell and Masthay, welcome Jake Schum. While Masthay posted better gross and net punting averages, Schum had better % of placing inside the 20 (it was like 26% vs. 22%). Are we in the age of punting analytics?

Going to be some tough roster cuts, especially for DBs and WRs. Maybe trade a DB for a RB?

I scratched my head on the punter swap too. Schum was also stated as being inconsistent.

But I think if you look at Masthay's trend, I'd guess he is on the tailing off side, while Schum has some upside. So at a worst, it looks like a wash with possible upside.

Schum was ready to punt last night. He looked great except for one "ok" punt.

Bakhtiari signed to a contract extension. Believed to be 4-years/$51.67 million.

I'm glad to resign him, but holy overpay batman! Top 5 O-lineman money? I realize he is a LT, but that still seems to be high for him. I'm guessing they were in a bit of a bind after letting Sitton go...

Saw a stat - not sure if this was prior to the game or after the game - that Bakhtiari has gone 463 pass blocking snaps without allowing a sack, the longest current streak for a LT in the NFL. Bak graded out as the 2nd best Packer regardless of position yesterday.

I remember Ron Wolf saying the biggest mistake he ever made was letting Craig Hentrich get away. If there were a punter of his magnitude available I would not be opposed to spending a fairly high draft pick on him.

In other news, I was quite dismayed when they cut Sitton but Lane Taylor has been a very pleasant surprise.

Joe Callahan... waived. No corresponding roster move announced as yet. I would guess it's to make room for one of the suspended guys coming back. I found this move rather surprising and I'd be shocked if he clears waivers. There are a lot of QB desperate teams out there.
